Job summary

The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia is seeking a Vet Tech Senior to join the ULAR program. You will perform veterinary clinical care tasks for mice/rats, manage records, perform treatments, and collaborate with veterinary staff to ensure animal welfare.

This role requires experience in a research setting, AALAS certification preferred, and the ability to lift 25-50 pounds. Weekend duties and occasional after-hours work may be required.

Qualifications

• 0-1 years of related experience, or 3-5 years in ULAR husbandry.
• AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level preferred, or a demonstrated commitment to attaining that certification within the time frame established by AALAS.
• Ability to respond to changing circumstances by being innovative and altering behavior to better fit different situations.
• Ability to lift 25-50 pounds, with fair amount of walking.
• Computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Word programs.

Responsibilities

• Independently manage veterinary clinical care tasks for mice/rats including triage, record review, injectable, oral, topical medication administration and euthanasia. Requires regular weekend duty (with flexible weekdays off); occasional after-hours duty may be needed.
• Communicate with clinical veterinary staff and lab personnel regarding the health of colony animals. Maintain animal health records, perform drug calculations. Consult with veterinary clinical staff and investigator staff on clinical treatment options.
• Work with other veterinary technicians and veterinarians in the provision of care to research animals in ULAR-managed vivaria including performing colony maintenance procedures for USDA species, animal handling/restraint, and associated recordkeeping.
• Maintain drug/supply/equipment inventory. Includes equipment cleaning/sterilization, Operating room cleaning/maintenance, filling investigator requests for drugs/supplies.
• Operate sterilization equipment and prepare surgical equipment packs. Prepare bills for treatments/medications used to provide veterinary clinical care.
