Job summary

American Association of Zoo Veterinarians Co. in Louisiana seeks a Veterinary Technician Supervisor to provide medical care for chimpanzees under the Attending Veterinarian’s supervision and supervise veterinary technical staff.

Responsibilities include assisting with exams, treatments, surgeries, medication administration, and maintaining medical records. Strong leadership and experience with non-human primates are required; a veterinary technology degree is preferred.

Qualifications

• Degree in Veterinary Technology preferred; an associate degree in a related field with eight years of veterinary technician experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
• Five years of progressively responsible veterinary/clinical experience with NHP, zoological, laboratory animal, wildlife, or exotic animals preferred.
• Three years working with chimpanzees preferred.
• Demonstrated experience leading, training, mentoring, or supervising staff, and developing team members’ communication skills within and across animal care departments.
• Two years supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical care for chimpanzees under Attending Veterinarian’s supervision and supervise veterinary technical staff.
• Assist veterinarians with physical exams, treatments, and procedures, including sample collection.
• Observe chimpanzees for disease symptoms and dispense medications under direction of veterinarian.
• Assist during surgery and necropsies and operate related equipment.
• Coordinate laboratory tests and shipment; maintain medical records and equipment.
