Job summary

Chimp Haven seeks a dedicated veterinary professional to provide medical care for chimpanzees under the Attending Veterinarian’s supervision. The role includes supervising veterinary technical staff and coordinating clinical procedures and training across animal care teams.

Responsibilities include assisting with exams, procedures, surgeries, sedation, and laboratory coordination, while maintaining medical records and ensuring clinic cleanliness. Strong leadership and communication are essential.

Qualifications

• Degree in Veterinary Technology preferred; or associate degree plus eight years of veterinary technician experience.
• Five years of veterinary/clinical experience with NHP, zoological, laboratory animal, wildlife, or exotic animals preferred.
• Two years supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarian with physical exams, treatments and procedures, including collection of samples.
• Perform routine veterinary procedures under direction of Veterinarian.
• Observe chimpanzees for disease symptoms.
• Dispense medication to chimpanzees under veterinarian direction.
• Assist during surgery and necropsies, including equipment operation and tissue preparation.
• Maintain cleanliness of vet clinics and conduct bi-weekly inspections.
• Order and stock veterinary supplies; maintain medical records.
• Assist with sedation and recovery of chimpanzees.
• Coordinate laboratory tests and shipments.
• Assist with educational programs; may lead programs.
• Coordinate training of chimpanzees with Positive Reinforcement Training staff.
• Supervise veterinary technical staff and participate in hiring/training.
• Create work schedules and conduct staff evaluations.
• Train animal care staff on veterinary techniques.
