MathWorks is seeking a UX Researcher for the Stateflow team to improve user experiences across MATLAB/Simulink-based products. You will partner with a cross-functional team to research, design, and validate solutions for state machines and related design workflows.

The role emphasizes user-centered methods, collaboration with engineers, and evaluating AI-enabled design processes to build trust and transparency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 6+ years of professional experience (or a Master's with 3+ years, or PhD).
  • STEM degree with experience in user research tools and collaboration platforms.
  • Knowledge of Stateflow, MATLAB, Simulink, and state machine concepts; coding in Python, C++, R, or JS; Git a plus.
  • Experience with generative AI tools, prompt engineering, and human-AI interaction principles.
  • Strong judgment translating evidence into product requirements and collaborating with engineers, PMs, and customer-facing partners.

Responsibilities

  • Identify appropriate user research methods based on project needs and constraints.
  • Conduct research to understand how engineers model, simulate, and debug state machines to influence product direction.
  • Advocate for technical users and research participants across products.
  • Execute qualitative and quantitative studies such as interviews, surveys, usability testing, and card sorting.
  • Study how users interact with AI tools to improve trust, transparency, and control.
  • Interpret user feedback and provide design recommendations to product teams.
  • Contribute to requirements and collaborate on design documents.

Responsibilities

As a UX Researcher on the Stateflow team, you will collaborate with members of a cross-functional development team to improve the user experience for MathWorks products and applications. You will follow a user-centered design approach and work collaboratively to research, design, and validate innovative solutions to complex problems.

  • Identify which user research methods to use to answer questions about users and design directions based on projects' needs, goals and constraints
  • Conduct user research, identify user pains, and study how engineers model, simulate, and debug state machines and decision logic to impact strategy and product direction
  • Act as an advocate for our technical users
  • Execute a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods such as, but not limited to, user interviews, surveys, usability testing, and card sorting
  • Conduct research to understand how users interact with AI tools and identify opportunities to improve trust, transparency, control, and overall user experience
  • Help the teams interpret and understand user feedback and provide recommendations for design considerations based on that feedback
  • Contribute to requirements and collaborate on design documents
Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree and 6 years of professional work experience (or a master's degree and 3 years of professional work experience, or a PhD degree, or equivalent experience) is required.
Additional Qualifications

STEM Degree (e.g., Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Cognitive Sciences, Human Computer Interaction, or other relevant degree).

Experience with relevant research and collaboration tools (e.g. Optimal Workshop, Qualaroo, Miro).

Knowledge of Stateflow, MATLAB, Simulink, state machine or finite-state modeling concepts, other programming languages (Python, C++, R, or JS), with Git as a plus.

Knowledge of generative AI tools, prompt engineering, and human-AI interaction principles, including model limitations such as hallucinations and bias.

Demonstrated research judgment in determining when AI should automate and where human control matters, and in translating evidence into product requirements.

Ability to collaborate effectively with software engineers, product managers, and customer-facing engineers.
