Job summary

Cornell University in Ithaca, NY seeks a Senior Engineer for the Utilities Planning and Renewal team to lead engineering and capital projects for power, steam, hot water, and chilled water systems. The role focuses on reliability, asset management, and guiding the transition from fossil fuels to grid-supplied electricity.

The Senior Engineer will oversee design, analysis, and lifecycle cost evaluations while mentoring engineers and collaborating with operations, maintenance, and campus

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience—operations, design or technical construction administration.
  • Direct experience managing engineering consultants.
  • New York State Professional Engineering license.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in design, maintenance or operation of industrial boilers, chillers, heat pumps, geoexchange systems and/or thermal distribution systems.
  • Demonstrates the divisional values of truth, respect, teamwork, integrity and excellence.
  • Ability to work in environments with high ambient temperature, noise and dust; safety with chemicals, high temperature/pressure steam, confined spaces and other hazards.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license; travel to job sites may be required.
  • Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering and project leadership for the University’s power, steam, hot water, and chilled water, and related thermal utility systems.
  • Design and reliability engineering, asset management, and capital project leadership and support for safe, reliable delivery 24/7/365.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, project management, consultants, and campus stakeholders; model system conditions and lifecycle costs.
  • Mentor other engineers and project managers; manage multiple complex, interdependent projects.
  • Support commissioning, documentation control, regulatory compliance, and emergency response.
