Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

Reporting the University Budget Director and Associate Director the Senior University Financial Planning Analyst will be responsible for both strategic and tactical efforts to support the University’s mission and financial strategy. They play a crucial role in helping leadership at various levels of the University make informed decisions about their financial operations by assessing budget proposals, building Proformas, calculating and interpreting financial ratios, identifying spending trends through data analysis, and forecasting future financial needs and opportunities. Long-term planning efforts include building and maintaining a dynamic financial model (use model to identify ways to improve financial health of university); construct and delivery of effective reports and tools; identifying and implementing new systems and upgrading functionality; and maintaining currency of systems applications to provide greater insights and enhance efficiencies. Current year efforts involve data integrity, Chart of Account and Rule code modifications; and pursuing improvements in both Inter- and Intra-Divisional policies, procedures, and practices to ensure that data is provided to decision-makers in both an informative and actionable manner. Their expertise supports fiscal responsibility and efficiency, making them indispensable in the stewardship of the organization’s financial health.

Essential Functions

  • Leads development of financial, statistical, and cost models for use by the Board of Regents (BoR), President, Cabinet, and the Institutional Budget Committee ( IBC ) in both annual budget formulation and critical decision-making, including return on investment. This requires deep understanding of interdependencies in all aspects of the University and using judgement to create formulaic assumptions and relationships. This effort includes determination of how to optimally convey information through the creation of charts, tables, summaries, and other presentation materials including dynamic and interactive materials.
  • Drives fiscal year end forecasting multiple times during the fiscal year both university wide and encompassing all fund types. Directs Division/School Budget Directors on approach; enforces timeline; gathers, validates, and consolidates information into university wide view; performs variance analysis; and provides to CFO and BoR with written narratives which include impact of variances on the overall financial ratios and plans.
  • Guides, informs, and trains all the Division/School Budget Directors on policy, procedures, and bestpractices to ensure that units are operating within uniform standards in support of the University’sStrategic goals. Senior University Financial Planning Analyst works with them to identify and understandkey drivers to enhance financial modeling and forecast accuracy for all funds (including designated, gifts,endowed, etc.) while partnering to improve efficiency and reduce costs and teaching them best Businesspractices.
  • Takes the lead on ad hoc analyses and research projects as requested by the Board of Regents, thePresident, the Cabinet, VP of Business and Finance, or University Budget Director as required.Responsibilities include the identification of relevant and usable data sources, selecting appropriatemethods of data collection and data analysis, manipulating dataset in excel or other tool, reconciling andreporting on conclusions, implications, and recommendations. Works directly with stakeholders asappropriate with little or no direction.
  • Creates, maintains, and distributes tools that provide historical data and actively monitors financialperformances against approved budget to ensure that the current fiscal year and multi-year forecasts areon track. Responsible for investigating and promptly reporting on any deviations from expected results tothe University Budget Director. Reporting to include both the cause and recommended actions, whichmay be a series of short term and long-term fixes. This requires constant and effective two-waycommunication with Division/School Budget Directors to make sure changes in activity in their separateareas are captured in the university wide Budget revisions on a regular basis.
  • Champions data integrity through constant monitoring, reconciliation and analysis of data elements both within the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system and the calibration of reports and other tools used to extract data from it. Requires constant communication and collaboration with other parties responsible for input of varies data elements into the system to ensure that they fully understand the potential impact of any adjustments made to the input process, timing, elements, data source, etc.
  • Continually strives improve departmental, interdepartmental (within the Budget and Finance Division) and intra-divisional financial practices, processes, procedures, systems, and models for both efficiency and effectiveness. This includes understanding, testing, and implementing upgrades in the ERP in conjunction with the Information Technology (IT) counterparts and a willingness to think outside of the box.
  • Serves on committees to represent University Budget perspective including various search committee for financial related positions in other departments, employee recognition committees, University-wide committees and efforts supporting Diversity Equity and Inclusion in addition to other similar efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or related discipline.
  • Seven (7) years of experience with accounting and accounting principles, relevant budget, fiscal or cost analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Finance or related area or experience in non-profit or higher education setting.
  • Excellent financial analytical skills.
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel, Access or other relational database systems.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with use of computer and phone. Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Constant verbal and written communication. Occasional standing, walking across campus, climbing stairs, stooping and reaching. May be required to lift up to 25 pounds. Infrequent travel to other campuses with occasional overnight stays out of the region or out of the state.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work performed during standard business hours.
Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.

Hiring Range

Hiring Range $86,642.00 - $119,094.00 per year depending on experience level. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations.
