Job summary

AFSCME Council 57 seeks an Union Representative to provide comprehensive support to members and locals. The role involves organizing, grievances handling, contract negotiations, and leadership development, with independence in varied settings.

Acts as liaison with councils and coalitions, and contributes to political action and communications programs. Candidates should demonstrate strong labor relations knowledge, advocacy experience, and the ability to mentor local leadership while engaging

Qualifications

• Three or more years of related work experience.
• Extensive knowledge of labor unions, labor laws and labor relations issues in both the public and private sector.
• Ability to establish rapport with diverse groups and organize members.
• Experience in advocacy and leadership development.
• Proven effectiveness in working with local union activists.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Chief Negotiator or assist in contract negotiations, including proposals and campaigns.
• Contract enforcement, steward training, and grievances/disciplinary appeals up to arbitration.
• Strengthen union membership and maintain membership maps/lists.
• Develop leadership through training and distributing campaign materials.
• Assist with local union administration, newsletters, and communications.
• Lead worksite campaigns and political/legislative actions.
