Job summary

Penn Mutual is seeking a Director, Underwriting Strategy & Governance in the United States. You will partner with the VP Chief Underwriter to execute strategy, strengthen governance, and elevate underwriting capability across the organization.

The role blends limited production authority on complex cases with deep mentorship, training leadership, and guiding underwriting initiatives. Ten+ years of life underwriting and signing authority of up to $20M are expected.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of life underwriting experience and authority on complex cases.
• Experience mentoring underwriters and leading technical initiatives.
• Knowledge of life products and governance frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Mentor underwriters to strengthen technical judgment and consistency in decisions.
• Develop and deliver underwriting training programs with governance teams.
• Reinforce standards, documentation, and governance discipline.
• Support execution of underwriting strategy and policy changes.
• Participate in governance forums with technical input and analysis.
• Contribute to quality reviews, audits, and improvement opportunities.
• Assist in complex risk issues and escalation of insights.
• Lead projects including process improvements and tool adoption.
• Promote modernization through new workflows and AI tools.
• Collaborate with Medical, Actuarial, Product, Reinsurance, Distribution, Compliance, Operations.
