Markel is seeking a contract bond underwriter to independently underwrite contracts, assess risk, and build a profitable book within a designated territory in the United States—Oregon area.

You will work with agents, aim for budgeted results, and engage in projects that impact the business, while applying knowledge of underwriting and rate manuals to negotiate terms within authority limits.

Competenze

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• 3-5 years in an underwriting capacity.
• Solid understanding of contract and subdivision bond underwriting.
• Ability to write and articulate in a concise and clear manner to convey complex information.
• Underwrites for profitable premium growth.
• Associate learns the nuances of the surety rate manual.
• Under minimal supervision makes quick sound decisions and negotiates terms and conditions within authority limits, standards and submission timeframes.
• Self-sufficient with demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles.
• Takes ownership and responsibility for decisions and outcomes.
• Provides guidance and coaching to others.

Primary responsibilities include 1) independently underwrite contract bonds adhering to Markel Surety’s underwriting philosophy, appropriately assessing the risk presented and properly managing that risk and 2) conduct all forms of marketing to strategically build a profitable book in a designated territory. The underwriter is to have the knowledge and apply the skills required of this position, including knowledge of required and normal ratios, risks associated with various types of construction activities, competition’s underwriting attitudes and industry norms for all issues. The underwriter is the source for knowledge and information concerning bonding.
