Job summary

Markel in the United States is seeking an experienced Ocean Marine Underwriter to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner, following established guidelines and authority levels. You will use underwriting tools to determine classifications, rates and premiums, and ensure compliance with state laws.

Responsibilities include reviewing forms, pricing analysis, audits, and coaching others; maintaining strong relationships with producers; and cross-selling Markel products.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of current experience underwriting profitable ocean marine business.
• Demonstrated technical knowledge and progression to positions of increasing responsibility.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong presentation aptitude.
• MS Word and MS Excel proficiency.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
• Flexible to travel up to 25% when appropriate.

• Manage the renewal book and implement corrective measures to meet profitability expectations.

• Participate in audits and underwriting meetings as required.
• Build and maintain quality relationships with key producers.
• Cross-sell opportunities with other Markel divisions and promote Markel’s products.
• Review forms and pricing of competitors and effectively market the Markel product.

The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and participate in special projects having an impact on the business. Assigned larger and more important agents/brokers. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Able to provide coaching to others.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of current experience underwriting profitable ocean marine business
• Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and skilled presentation aptitude
• Microsoft Office skills to include MS Word and MS Excel.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills;
• Flexible to travel up to 25% travel when appropriate
• Must be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment with a desire to succeed.

Pay Information

The salary range for this position is $87,100 - $181,400/year. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting. This position may also be eligible to participate in the Company’s annual incentive plan.
