Job summary

Markel Group in Seattle seeks an experienced Ocean Cargo Underwriter to underwrite new business and renewals profitably within guidelines, and mentor less experienced underwriters.

You will assess submissions, determine risk and pricing, manage relationships with agents and clients, and travel within the territory as needed. Strong knowledge of coverage forms and rating tools is required, along with excellent communication.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of current experience underwriting profitable Ocean Cargo or related Inland Marine or related business.
  • Bachelor’s degree and industry designations (proven, outstanding experience can be substituted for education).
  • Proven outstanding reputation with wholesale and retail distribution.
  • Knowledge of pricing accounts using rating and modeling tools/techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Proposed producers, and to make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate.
  • Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit.
  • Review submissions and identify exposure and risk from information provided.
  • Underwrite renewal business review terms, conditions and pricing and handle related account servicing.
  • Monitor producers for profitability and production.
  • Monitor results of the overall book of business assigned; and recommend corrective action as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships within assigned region and product line management.
  • Market products to producers by coordinating marketing plans with Southeast management team.
  • Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.
  • Cross‑sell opportunities with other Markel divisions through the promotion of Markel’s products and services.
  • Coordinate with other Markel platforms on common accounts.
  • Travel within territory

The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and drive projects having an impact on the business. Assigned larger, more important and more complex accounts. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non‐renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Viewed as an expert within a product area and able to mentor less experienced underwriters.

  • Superb MS Office and underwriting system skills.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Must be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment.
