Job summary

EMC Insurance is seeking an experienced underwriter to manage a high-volume middle market book with strong underwriting authority. You will evaluate complex accounts, determine pricing, and communicate decisions to agents while fostering agency relationships.

Ideal candidates have a bachelor’s degree in insurance or business administration and at least five years in commercial lines underwriting, with preferred professional designations.

  • Insurance designations such as AINS, AU, CIC, or CPCU preferred.

Essential Functions:
  • Selects, grows and maintains a profitable book of business for assigned high-volume middle market territory with a high level of underwriting authority.
  • Evaluates highly complex accounts, such as different business operations, multiple lines of business or special pricing requirements, for risk selection and pricing purposes.
  • Analyzes exposure, company and branch risk appetite, account premium and loss history, financial data, line(s) of business, price guidance, motor vehicle records, online sources of information, reports from premium audit or Loss Control and other relevant information to underwrite policies.
  • Offers appropriate coverage, terms and conditions for exposures.
  • Develops and fosters agency relationships.
  • Educates agents on EMC products, underwriting appetite, systems, and services Visits agencies to discuss accounts and provide agents with updates at EMC in order to maximize opportunities.
  • Communicates with agents proactively and anticipates agents and insureds’ needs Identifies opportunities and potential barriers within agency relationships.
  • Collaborates with marketing representatives to ensure agents receive superior customer experiences, responsiveness, and select EMC as their insurer of choice.
  • Effectively explains risk acceptance and/or rejection decisions to agents.
  • Coordinates with marketing and regional management in the agency planning and review processes.
  • Monitors progress of assigned agents and guides agents in achieving annual goals.
  • Seeks feedback from agents and takes action to improve their experience and grow strong books of business.
  • Serves as subject matter expert for the region on less common product offerings and classes of business offered across the region.
  • Administers and assists with loss sensitive and other alternative rating plans as necessary.
  • Assists regional underwriting leadership with the completion of monthly quality control audits of new and renewal accounts, and identifies trends in file reviews.
  • Serves as a technical resource for underwriting team members and provides underwriting support on complex issues.
  • Performs peer reviews of work completed by less experienced underwriters and provides training on identified issues and areas for improvement.
Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree, preferably in insurance or business administration or equivalent relevant experience Five years of experience in commercial lines underwriting or related experience Insurance designations, such as AINS, AU, CIC, or CPCU preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Excellent knowledge of underwriting and risk analysis Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions Strong customer service skills Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak effectively before groups Strong presentation skills preferred Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently Demonstrated leadership qualities Occasional travel; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving

The hiring salary range for this position will vary based on geographic location, falling within either of the following: $92,670 - $128,045 or $102,443 - $140,845 A hiring range represents a subset of the full salary range.

The actual salary will depend on several factors, including relevant education, skills, and experience of an applicant, geographic location, and business needs.
