Job summary

Arlington County Government seeks an experienced Transportation Engineering & Operations Bureau Chief to lead multimodal mobility, safety, equity, and innovation. You will direct planning, implementation, and performance of transportation assets, and set strategic direction aligned with Vision Zero and County priorities.

A Virginia PE license is required; a Master’s degree and public-sector leadership are preferred. Excellent collaboration with safety and emergency services will be essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
• Significant and progressively responsible experience in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Planning, or Parking Administration.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Virginia or reciprocity in another state.

Responsibilities

• Providing enterprise-level leadership for Arlington County’s transportation engineering and operations programs, setting strategic direction.
• Overseeing planning, implementation, operation, and maintenance of critical transportation systems (signals, ITS, street lighting, signs, pavement markings, parking, curb-space).
• Advancing safety and Vision Zero with data-driven analysis and multimodal improvements.
• Leading design, traffic engineering analysis, and development review activities including traffic patterns and site plans.
• Managing parking and curb-space programs including meters, permits, and policy development.
• Providing bureau-wide administrative and program management oversight, including budgets, contracts, and staff supervision.
• Coordinating transportation operations with Public Safety and Emergency Management during events and emergencies.
• Performing related duties to support transportation programs and organizational needs.
