The role emphasizes client development, team leadership, and technical excellence, including directing projects, mentoring staff, and coordinating with Iowa DOT and municipalities. The successful candidate will bring a PE license and 10+ years in transportation engineering.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
• PE license in Iowa or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in transportation engineering; traffic, or roadway design.
• Minimum 5 years of experience working with the Iowa DOT.
• Demonstrated experience leading teams and managing staff.
• Proven success in business development and winning work.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead business development efforts in Des Moines region and Iowa DOT/municipal clients.
• Provide day-to-day leadership within the Des Moines office and staff development.
• Serve as Project Manager on transportation projects including roadway, traffic, and planning.
• Oversee scope, schedule, budget, and QA/QC on deliverables.
• Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders for successful delivery.

Job description

Felsburg Holt & Ullevig (FHU) is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Transportation Project Manager to help grow our Des Moines office. This role is ideal for a senior leader who brings strong technical expertise, a passion for building client relationships, and a proven ability to win and deliver work. This individual will play a key role in shaping FHU's growth in Iowa, leading business development efforts, supporting project delivery, and providing leadership to local staff.

Business Development & Client Leadership

• Lead business development efforts in the Des Moines region and Iowa, with a focus on Iowa DOT and Municipal clients
• Assist with developing and executing a regional business development strategy aligned with FHU growth goals
• Build and maintain strong client relationships and actively position FHU for upcoming pursuits
• Lead or support proposals, interviews, and marketing strategies to secure new work
• Demonstrate the ability to win work and grow backlog

Office & Team Leadership

• Provide day-to-day leadership within the Des Moines office, supporting staff development, hiring, and retention
• Partner with regional and technical leadership in setting direction for growth and staffing
• Mentor and develop staff while fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment
• Support recruiting and help build a strong local team aligned with FHU culture

Project Management & Technical Oversight

• Serve as Project Manager on transportation projects, including roadway, traffic, and planning efforts
• Oversee project scope, schedule, budget, and quality
• Provide technical guidance and QA/QC oversight on project deliverables
• Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery
• Maintain strong working relationships with Iowa DOT and support ongoing coordination efforts
• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Iowa, or ability to obtain within 6 months

The pay for this position has a range of $140,000 - $170,000 annually. The actual offer will carefully consider a range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience.
