Under the general direction of a Supervising Transportation Engineer (Office Chief), the Senior Transportation Engineer is the Transportation Safety Manager (TSM) responsible for all aspects of day-to-day transportation safety-related activities and performance on assigned corridor(s) in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. The TSM is responsible for leading a team in proactively identifying and implementing new technologies, innovations, best practices, while supporting the development and establishment of new programs, guidelines, and policies to eliminate fatalities, serious injuries, and equity-based disparities in road safety outcomes. The incumbent will be responsible for the implementation and incorporation of the Safe System Approach in accordance with daily activities, including projects and initiatives. Services rendered by the TSM will focus on the implementation of strategies which align with high priority focus areas including speed management, roadway departure, intersections, and vulnerable (active transportation) users.
The TSM provides input into the formulation of transportation safety-related policy development and implementation. The incumbent is responsible for carrying out all aspects of road safety activities in conjunction with other Offices and Divisions within
the District, Headquarters, as well as external transportation entities and industry stakeholders to achieve strategic goals that embrace improved performance of the transportation system while ensuring safety of travelers and highway workers.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
