Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines and auxiliary power systems and has been revolutionizing modern flight for over 100 years. Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense.

Pratt & Whitney is seeking a visionary Senior Transmissions Design Manager to lead and grow our Mechanical Systems, Externals, and Nacelles (MSEN) Engineering Transmissions team. In this role, you will lead, mentor, and develop high-performing engineering teams with varying levels of experience while applying your deep expertise in aerospace gear and transmission design to advance complex gearbox solutions from concept through testing and production. You will shape the future of the transmissions discipline by strengthening technical capabilities, advancing analytical tools and processes, and collaborating across engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and leadership to deliver innovative, reliable, and manufacturable aerospace hardware.

What You Will Do
  • Lead and develop a high-performing transmissions engineering team, managing engineers across varying experience levels while building technical capability through mentoring, training, and targeted development.
  • Lead gearbox and transmission design activities, applying expertise in bevel, spur, helical, and spiral bevel gears using automated design and analysis tools, finite element analysis, and engineering hand calculations.
  • Advance the transmissions discipline through continuous improvement of analytical tools, engineering processes, procedures, and technical training materials.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams and root cause investigations (RRCA) by coordinating technical work, assigning and closing action items, mentoring team members, and communicating findings and recommendations to engineering leadership.
  • Drive testing and validation activities, including test rig development, test plan creation, instrumentation selection, limit development, pre-test predictions, data processing, and technical reporting.
  • Partner across functions, organizations, suppliers, and levels of management to integrate requirements, maintain design ownership, and ensure gearbox designs meet performance, quality, cost, schedule, and manufacturability objectives.
  • Apply advanced gear design and manufacturing expertise, leveraging industry-standard tools and knowledge of hobbing, shaping, broaching, milling, heat treating, and superfinishing processes.
  • Travel Requirement: 10% (Domestic and International).
What You Will Learn
  • Gain broader exposure to end-to-end aerospace transmission development, from gear design and analysis through testing, manufacturing, and product maturation.
  • Develop deeper expertise in advanced gearbox architecture and gear design, including bevel, spur, helical, and spiral bevel gear applications.
  • Strengthen your ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and integrate technical disciplines into successful gearbox designs.
  • Expand your knowledge of transmission analytical methods, tools, processes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Build greater proficiency in aerospace transmission testing and validation, including test planning, instrumentation, predictions, limits, data analysis, and technical reporting.
  • Develop stronger understanding of the gear manufacturing lifecycle, including machining, heat treatment, finishing, and the practical considerations that influence gear performance and manufacturability.
  • Further develop enterprise-level engineering leadership skills, including collaboration with suppliers and cross-functional organizations, technical mentoring, root cause leadership, and application of RTX leadership behaviors.
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant Engineering discipline with 10 years of relevant engineering experience, or an Advanced degree in a related field with 7 years of relevant engineering experience, including demonstrated expertise in gear design and analysis. Demonstrated experience in gear design and analysis, including automated design and analysis tools, finite element analysis, and engineering hand calculations applied to complex mechanical systems or aerospace hardware, and demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and developing engineering teams, including engineers with varying levels of experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience with complex mechanical systems, gear, or transmission hardware, with demonstrated technical expertise in gear design and manufacturing.
Qualifications We Prefer
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or actively pursuing an Advanced degree in a related field.
  • An active U.S. Government Security Clearance.
  • Exceptional communication, task coordination, and cross-functional leadership skills.
