Role Overview
We are seeking a Tooling Engineer to support injection molding tooling projects from initial design and receipt through installation, commissioning, validation, and ongoing production support. The role will work closely with Engineering, Quality, Production, suppliers, vendors, and customers to ensure tooling and automated molding systems meet technical, quality, and manufacturing requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Support injection mold tooling projects, including the design, receipt, transfer, installation, commissioning, and qualification of injection molds, automation end-of-arm tooling, assembly fixtures, and manufacturing aids.
- Assist with the validation of injection molding tools and automated molding systems, including the preparation, review, and execution of validation documentation.
- Support equipment and mold start-up, troubleshooting, installation, optimization, and process improvement activities.
- Provide technical expertise related to injection mold design and operation to Quality, Engineering, Production, and other cross-functional teams.
- Create, modify, and maintain 3D CAD models and detailed 2D engineering drawings for injection molds, end-of-arm tooling, assembly fixtures, metrology fixtures, and manufacturing aids.
- Maintain injection mold and hot-runner drawings and engineering documentation, including CAD files, bills of materials, revisions, and associated records.
- Support quality investigations and engineering documentation activities, including issue reviews, nonconformance reports, CAPA activities, and engineering change requests.
- Manage tooling inventory, spare steel, consumables, incoming-tool documentation, and inventory records.
- Coordinate with tooling suppliers and vendors to track project milestones, schedules, progress, delays, and inbound/outbound shipments.
- Assist in the design, fabrication, assembly, and servicing of custom tooling, components, fixtures, and manufacturing aids.
- Collaborate with internal teams, customers, suppliers, and external vendors to ensure project requirements and customer expectations are met.
- Support Lean Manufacturing and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) initiatives.
- Perform equipment acceptance testing and required gowning procedures while working within ISO 7/8 cleanroom environments.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong experience with injection mold tooling design, operation, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with injection molding automation, end-of-arm tooling, assembly fixtures, metrology fixtures, and manufacturing aids.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks, including the creation and modification of 3D CAD models and detailed 2D drawings.
- Experience preparing and executing validation documentation for injection mold tooling and automated molding systems.
- Working knowledge of GD&T and detailed engineering drawing practices.
- Experience with tooling inventory management, vendor coordination, engineering documentation, and project tracking.
- Hands‑on experience designing, fabricating, assembling, maintaining, or servicing complex injection molding tools.
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment, preferably with plastic injection molding.
- Familiarity with simple electronic wiring assemblies, sensors, and related tooling/equipment systems.
- Experience working in GMP or GLP-regulated environments.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles and Design for Manufacturability concepts.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with SAP S/4HANA.
- Experience supporting regulated manufacturing environments.
- Experience with automated molding systems and equipment acceptance testing.
- Familiarity with cleanroom manufacturing operations and documentation practices.
