Job summary

Blue Origin Engines in Huntsville, AL seeks an experienced thermo‑mechanical engineer to develop and own 2D axisymmetric whole‑engine models of rotating equipment, predicting temperatures, deflections and clearances across the full operating envelope.

You will translate 3D geometry into efficient 2D representations, implement transient profiles, calibrate against rig/test data, and collaborate with design, aero/CFD, rotordynamics, materials, and test teams to deliver actionable life‑assessment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 8+ years in mechanical/structural/thermal analysis of rotating machinery or equivalent ownership of a whole‑engine/2D axisymmetric thermo‑mechanical model.
  • Hands‑on experience with transient thermal and nonlinear structural FEA in ANSYS (contact, plasticity, thermal‑structural coupling).
  • Demonstrated experience building whole‑engine/2D axisymmetric thermo‑mechanical models of rotating equipment.
  • Ability to independently derive convective heat‑transfer boundary conditions from correlations.
  • Experience working in cross‑disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Track record of ownership, resilience, and delivering results.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and own 2D axisymmetric thermo‑mechanical whole‑engine/whole‑pump models of rotating equipment.
  • Translate 3D component geometry into efficient 2D axisymmetric representations capturing thermal/structural features.
  • Implement transient operating profiles and assess effects on clearance and growth.
  • Collaborate with secondary‑flow analysts to develop conjugate thermal‑fluid models and calibrate against test data.
  • Apply boundary conditions to axisymmetric models to predict clearance closure across transients.
  • Perform margin assessments using 2D/3D ANSYS and feed results to life assessment.
  • Synthesize results into operability guidance and negotiate system‑level ConOps trades.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to anchor analysis assumptions and resolve issues.
  • Develop and maintain analysis‑driven design requirements and documentation.
