Job summary

Exponent seeks a Thermal Sciences Senior Associate (Ph.D.) to join our Thermal Sciences Practice in Los Angeles, CA (also in Menlo Park, Phoenix, Seattle). This role involves applying fundamental engineering and scientific techniques to real-world problems in failure analysis, combustion, wildfire risk, and product development.

You will perform laboratory experiments and modeling, review client work, distill data, conduct risk assessments, and prepare reports. A Ph.D.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
• A practical and theoretical understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and combustion
• At least two years of relevant work experience is required
• Presently legally authorized to work in the United States. No immigration sponsorship or processing required.
• Hands-on experience developing and performing laboratory or field experiments in the areas of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer or combustion
• Outstanding ability to apply fundamental engineering concepts to new problems
• Familiarity with technical documents and equipment
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Responsibilities

• Performing laboratory experiments and analytical or computational modeling
• Reviewing and understanding experiments and simulations performed by clients
• Analyzing and distilling complex data
• Researching and parsing data from published literature
• Conducting risk assessments
• Preparing written reports, proposals, and presentations
• Managing projects and maintaining efficiency under deadlines
• Most assignments will require the ability to gather information from and convey technical conclusions to individuals in engineering, the legal profession, business and industry
• Performing field inspections, investigations and experiments
