Job summary

Uber AV Labs is seeking a Senior Thermal Engineer in Sunnyvale, CA, to own thermal design, validation, and troubleshooting for autonomous vehicle hardware from prototype through production.

You will develop cooling solutions, instrument prototypes, and run bench and vehicle tests across hot and cold environments, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver robust thermal performance.

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of thermal engineering experience, preferably in automotive/autonomous vehicles/robotics/high-power electronics.
• Strong hands-on experience designing, building, and validating cooling systems, including liquid cooling.
• Experience with environmental chambers and vehicle-level hot/cold testing.
• Experience with CAD and mechanical design; ability to work with prototype hardware and test equipment.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end thermal design and validation for vehicle hardware, including compute units, power electronics and sensor systems.
• Design practical thermal solutions using liquid cooling, conduction, convection, heat sinks, fans, heaters, insulation, and TIMs.
• Develop liquid cooling systems: coolant loops, cold plates, pumps, heat exchangers, reservoirs, valves, hoses, and integration.
• Build and instrument prototypes; perform bench, thermal chamber, and vehicle tests across hot/cold environments.
• Perform thermal and fluid calculations to size cooling components and evaluate performance.
• Use thermal/CFD simulation and correlate models with test data.
• Troubleshoot thermal and cooling-system issues on vehicles and hardware; find root causes and implement fixes.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, sensor, compute, vehicle integration teams.
• Drive designs from prototype to production release.
