Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking a Senior Thermal Design Engineer to design high‑quality, manufacturable thermal management components and drive them from concept to production. The role is onsite four days a week in Burlington, MA, with collaboration across production, quality, and solutions teams.

You will develop 3D CAD models, perform calculations, and ensure designs meet performance and durability targets while staying aligned with industry standards and export controls.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of mechanical/thermal design experience, preferably in a metal fabrication or machining environment.
• Proficiency in CAD software and GD&T.
• US Citizenship and/or Permanent Resident.
• Onshape experience is preferred.
• Experience with PLM/PDM systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and technical drawings for parts and sub-assemblies.
• Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles to support the optimization of designs.
• Perform engineering calculations and basic tolerance analyses to verify parts meet functional and durability requirements.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to incorporate feedback from production, quality, and solutions teams.
• Create and maintain design documentation and revision control records.
• Assist in investigating and resolving design-related production issues.
• Stay current on manufacturing processes, materials, and relevant industry standards.
• Support pre-sales efforts by providing technical input as needed.

Senior Thermal Design Engineer

Johnson Controls is hiring! The Senior Thermal Design Engineer will support the design and development of high‑quality, manufacturable thermal management components that meet performance, quality, and schedule requirements. They will work closely with the production, materials process, solutions, and quality teams to help ensure designs transition smoothly from concept to production. This position is based onsite 4 days per week at our Burlington, MA, location. Candidates must be commuting distance to the office, or able to relocate.

Who You Are

You are a technically skilled and creative engineer, capable of conceptualizing complex designs for thermal management and realizing them in CAD. You have experience designing for advanced manufacturing techniques and communicating your designs to other engineers.

How you will do it

1. Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and technical drawings for parts and sub‑assemblies.
2. Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles to support the optimization of designs.
3. Perform engineering calculations and basic tolerance analyses to verify parts meet functional and durability requirements.
4. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to incorporate feedback from production, quality, and solutions teams.
5. Create and maintain design documentation and revision control records.
6. Assist in investigating and resolving design‑related production issues.
7. Stay current on manufacturing processes, materials, and relevant industry standards.
8. Support pre‑sales efforts by providing technical input as needed.
9. Build a working understanding of JCI’s process, industry trends, and emerging technologies.

What you will need

1. Required Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
2. 5+ years of experience in mechanical/thermal part design, preferably in a metal fabrication or machining environment.
3. Proficiency in CAD software.
4. Working knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
5. US Citizen and/or Permanent Resident.
6. Preferred Experience working with PLM/PDM systems is a plus.
7. Onshape experience.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $90,000- $115,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This role offers a competitive Bonus plan that will take into account individual, group, and corporate performance. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
