Overview
An innovative engineering company in Austin, Texas is seeking an experienced Senior Test Engineer / Team Lead to join its advanced thermoelectric testing team. This role is responsible for characterizing thermoelectric (TE) materials and devices using LabVIEW-based data acquisition systems while leading test planning, supporting cross-functional engineering teams, and mentoring other test and failure analysis engineers.
The ideal candidate has strong hands-on laboratory experience, enjoys developing automated test solutions, and is passionate about improving test methods, data quality, and engineering processes.
Responsibilities
- Characterize thermoelectric (TE) materials to measure electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, Hall parameters, and other material properties using custom-built test systems.
- Perform thermoelectric device testing to evaluate maximum performance parameters (ΔT, voltage, current) and electrical characteristics (DC and AC resistance).
- Conduct wafer-level electrical testing using manual and semi-automatic probe stations.
- Analyze test data and prepare technical reports for engineering teams and leadership.
- Lead discussions on test results and data analysis to support engineering decisions related to material development and product performance.
- Develop, modify, and maintain LabVIEW test software and data processing tools to improve automation, throughput, and efficiency.
- Design, modify, and maintain custom test fixtures and laboratory equipment as needed.
- Coordinate testing schedules across engineering teams while providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior test and failure analysis engineers.
- Support the ongoing development and expansion of laboratory metrology capabilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline (Master's or PhD preferred).
- 3–5+ years of hands-on laboratory or engineering test experience, preferably involving thermoelectric materials or electronic devices.
- Experience with test automation using LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB, or similar programming tools.
- Strong data analysis and reporting skills using Python, MATLAB, and Microsoft Office.
- Experience with laboratory instrumentation such as digital multimeters, power supplies, data acquisition systems, and relay switching equipment.
- Familiarity with vacuum systems, including vacuum chambers, pumps, valves, fittings, and sealing methods.
- Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks is a plus.
- Experience with 3D printing for rapid prototyping is a plus.
- Experience using silicon wafer probe stations is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced engineering environment with occasional weekend support when needed.
