Job description

Description

GXM is seeking a Senior Technology Scout - Emerging Technology & Market Intelligence to support advanced defense and space-related mission programs focused on Command and Control (C2), mission modernization, and the rapid identification and adoption of commercial and emerging technologies.

GXM is seeking a Senior Technology Scout - Emerging Technology & Market Intelligence to support advanced defense and space-related mission programs focused on Command and Control (C2), mission modernization, and the rapid identification and adoption of commercial and emerging technologies.

The selected candidate will continuously explore the commercial technology landscape to identify emerging technologies, companies, products, and market developments that may address validated mission needs, capability gaps, and operational challenges. This individual will research technology markets, identify promising commercial and nontraditional providers, engage companies and innovation ecosystems, and translate findings into actionable insights for Government and program leadership.

The role requires a strong ability to quickly understand unfamiliar technologies, distinguish substantive capabilities from market hype, identify meaningful industry and technology trends, and assess the potential relevance of emerging solutions to defense and space missions. The ideal candidate combines technology curiosity, market awareness, analytical judgment, and strong communication skills with enough technical fluency to engage credibly with founders, engineers, Government technical personnel, and operational stakeholders.

A formal engineering background is valuable but is not the primary requirement for this position. Successful candidates may come from technology scouting, defense innovation, commercial technology assessment, venture or investment diligence, market intelligence, strategic technology research, technical consulting, systems engineering, or related environments.

Relevant technology areas may include commercial space, space domain awareness, C2 and common operating picture technologies, cloud and edge computing, DevSecOps, software, data platforms, artificial intelligence and machine learning, networking, cybersecurity, infrastructure, autonomy, and other emerging technologies applicable to defense and national security missions.

This role is onsite in Colorado Springs, CO. Hybrid flexibility may be available based on mission requirements and program needs.

Responsibilities
  • Continuously scout the commercial and emerging technology landscape to identify technologies, companies, products, and market developments that may address defense, space, C2, data, operational, and enterprise mission needs.
  • Translate validated mission needs, operational use cases, capability gaps, and technical requirements into focused technology scouting priorities, research questions, search areas, and evaluation criteria.
  • Identify and research startups, scale-ups, nontraditional defense companies, established commercial providers, research organizations, and other emerging market participants with potentially relevant capabilities.
  • Monitor technology and market developments, including new product launches, company growth, venture investment activity, strategic partnerships, acquisitions, research breakthroughs, Government innovation activity, and other indicators of meaningful change within priority technology areas.
  • Develop and maintain technology landscapes, company profiles, market maps, scouting pipelines, comparative assessments, and other structured intelligence products that provide visibility into relevant technologies and market participants.
  • Evaluate candidate technologies and companies for mission relevance, maturity, differentiation, potential operational value, scalability, deployment considerations, security implications, integration complexity, and potential barriers to Government adoption.
  • Conduct structured market assessments, technology comparisons, commercial capability reviews, and other analyses to help Government and program leadership understand available solutions and emerging alternatives.
  • Engage directly with technology companies, founders, technical leaders, research organizations, venture-backed companies, accelerators, investors, Government innovation organizations, and other ecosystem participants to understand capabilities, product direction, maturity, and potential mission applications.
  • Build and maintain awareness of key companies, market movers, emerging technology clusters, and innovation ecosystems relevant to defense and national security missions.
  • Participate in industry conferences, technology demonstrations, innovation events, pitch events, technical exchanges, and other forums to identify emerging capabilities and expand awareness of relevant commercial markets.
  • Rapidly develop working knowledge of unfamiliar technologies and ask informed questions that help determine whether a capability warrants deeper technical, operational, or acquisition evaluation.
  • Partner with systems engineers, enterprise and solution architects, software and DevSecOps teams, data engineers, cybersecurity personnel, operational users, and other subject matter experts to evaluate the technical feasibility and integration considerations associated with promising technologies.
  • Support technical demonstrations, prototypes, experiments, and evaluations designed to validate whether candidate technologies can address defined mission needs and operational use cases.
  • Develop concise technology scouting reports, company assessments, market intelligence products, decision briefs, comparative analyses, and recommendations for Government and program leadership.
  • Clearly communicate why an emerging technology or company matters, where it may create mission value, what risks or limitations exist, and what additional diligence or technical evaluation should occur before further investment or adoption.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizen with active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, Economics, Technology Management, or another relevant discipline. Equivalent relevant professional experience may be considered.
  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience in technology, engineering, innovation, or related environments, or 5–7 years with directly relevant experience in defense innovation (DIU/AFWERX), technology scouting, venture or investment diligence (VC/PE), commercial technology assessment, or innovation consulting.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying, researching, evaluating, or engaging emerging technology companies, startups, commercial technology providers, research organizations, or innovation ecosystems.
  • Demonstrated ability to research unfamiliar technology markets, identify relevant companies and capabilities, synthesize large amounts of information, and identify meaningful trends, differentiators, risks, and opportunities.
  • Ability to rapidly understand new technologies and explain their capabilities, limitations, maturity, potential applications, competitive positioning, and mission relevance to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Experience conducting technology comparisons, market assessments, company research, commercial capability evaluations, technical diligence, competitive analysis, or similar structured assessments.
  • Sufficient technical fluency to engage credibly with engineers, vendors, technical leaders, and Government stakeholders and to understand major technical considerations associated with emerging technologies.
  • Strong research, analytical, writing, briefing, and communication skills, with the ability to turn complex technology and market information into concise and actionable recommendations.
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and a strong interest in staying current on emerging technologies, companies, commercial markets, and innovation trends.
  • Ability to operate effectively across Government, industry, commercial technology, engineering, operational, and innovation communities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supporting defense, space, intelligence, Combatant Command, or multi-domain C2 environments and familiarity with operational mission systems and modernization challenges.
  • Experience within or supporting defense innovation organizations, commercial technology accelerators, venture capital organizations, corporate innovation teams, research organizations, or other technology scouting environments.
  • Existing relationships within commercial technology, startup, venture, research, or Government innovation ecosystems.
  • Experience conducting technical or commercial diligence of early-stage, venture-backed, or nontraditional technology companies.
  • Technical experience in one or more relevant technology areas, such as commercial space, space domain awareness, C2 systems, cloud and edge computing, DevSecOps, software, data platforms, AI/ML, networking, cybersecurity, autonomy, infrastructure, or systems integration.
  • Experience supporting rapid prototyping, experimentation, Other Transaction Authority (OTA) efforts, commercial capability insertion, technology transition, or other rapid acquisition and innovation activities.
  • Experience evaluating technology maturity, technical risk, integration considerations, security implications, or barriers to Government adoption.
