Akron General’s Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) is a high acuity 10-bed unit that cares for post-intervention stroke patients, neurological trauma, and other neuroscience critical care patients.

A caregiver in this position works nights, 7:00pm—3:30am.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Prepare units, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer, or emergencies.
  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.
  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight, and height.
  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction.
  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment, and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.
  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs, and respond promptly to patient call lights.
  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.
  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs, and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or obtain certification during the new hire period.
  • Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA).
  • One year of recent acute care experience.
