Patient Care Technician - Senior

UPMC Community Osteopathic is seeking a Patient Care Technician - Senior for their Neuro/Med Surg Unit.

Position Details
  • Full Time, 36 hours/week, Day/Evening rotating shifts

Starting pay rate varies based on experience.

Role Summary

The Patient Care Technician - Senior (PCT-Sr) provides routine patient care, supporting department services according to policies and under the direction of nurses or physicians. Responsibilities include assisting with patient procedures, ADLs, documenting in medical records, reporting equipment issues, and participating in unit activities like responding to call lights and transporting patients.

Effective communication and professional relationships with patients, families, and healthcare team members are essential. The PCT-Sr also provides feedback to RNs, reports patient status changes, and educates patients and families as directed.

Responsibilities
  • Perform duties aligned with system-wide competencies.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and communicate effectively with departments.
  • Build professional relationships and contribute to team activities.
  • Receive and act on feedback, identify learning needs, and participate in self-review.
  • Communicate clearly with the healthcare team, respecting cultural diversity and workplace safety.
  • Document accurately and complete clerical tasks.
  • Achieve and maintain competency in advanced skills like wound care, IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, and NG tube management.
  • Perform standard nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs, point-of-care testing, vital signs, telemetry, and specimen collection.
  • Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies, report patient changes, and instruct patients and families.
  • Adhere to policies and safety procedures, support department improvements, and participate in quality initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least 2 years of healthcare experience, or 1 year plus enrollment in a health sciences training program or bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Completion of a patient care technician senior class and basic information system training
  • CPR certification (AHA standards); ACLS preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally
  • Preferred: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification or current enrollment, and completion of basic arrhythmia course
Licensure and Certifications
  • CPR required within 30 days of hire
  • Act 34 clearance
