The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

In this role, you will serve as an experienced individual contributor within a team, with the expectation that you will further develop your leadership, guidance and mentoring skills. With minimal oversight from leadership, you will be responsible for supporting the goal of meeting scope, schedule and delivery requirements. A Senior Technical Writer impacts the long-term goals of the program, while contributing to the development of the program’s technical writing function. You may serve as the discipline’s primary lead when working with stakeholders and utilize strong influential skills to drive improvements in writing and experience processes and practices. Primary expectations of a Senior Technical Writer include:

  • Exhibits strong influential skills to build relationships with team members, government and company stakeholders, and program management
  • Serves as a mentor and coach to design team members
  • Responsible for both program tactical assignments, as well as strategic initiatives to meet delivery requirements
  • Serves as subject matter expert, interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, and referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals
  • Oversees preparation of illustrative materials, selecting drawings, sketches, diagrams and charts
  • Conducts quality review of materials
  • Translates complex data into user-friendly text for print and electronic publications, such as technical journals, user and training manuals, government proposals, websites and podcasts
  • Gathers information through research, statistical reports and interviews with technical staff
  • Develops cataloging systems, and maintains records, files, electronic media and archiving of information for publications
  • Assists in preparing material for technical seminars and business forums
  • Selects or recommends use of layouts, graphics, drawings, tables, exhibits, illustrations, charts, or storyboards to amplify or clarify publications objectives
  • Collaborates with a multi-disciplined team to facilitate discussions and articulate goals in order to deliver upon requirements
  • Demonstrates the ability to coach and mentor team members, with a focus on providing actionable feedback that helps individuals grow within the experience discipline
  • Ability to identify risks and communicate to leadership; provides recommendations to mitigate identified risks

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, or related scientific or technical discipline is required, and 5+ years of experience
  • Degree substitution: 8 additional years of relevant experience for a total of 13 years relevant experience can be substituted for the degree requirement
  • Create documentation, instruction manuals, how-to-guides, and other artifacts that communicate complex and technical information
  • Review and write API documentation for clarify and accuracy, including:
    • Open API Specifications (OAS)
    • Authorization and Authentication flows
    • API descriptions and overviews
    • API scopes and release notes
  • Own the content, information architecture, and quality of technical documentation for an innovative software delivery platform
  • Supports efforts to create user-facing micro-copy on developer portals
  • Collaborate with developers, product managers, and UX staff to deliver developer-centered experiences for users
  • Establish guidance and processes for delivery teams and UX teammates related to documentation and user communications
  • Extensive experience with writing principles and relevant technologies, understands roles with which they interact and how their work impacts business goals
  • Experience with design software such as Figma, Miro, Adobe or other tools

In support of various state and city equal pay transparency laws, Ad Hoc job descriptions feature the starting range we reasonably expect to pay to candidates who would join our team with little to no need for training on the responsibilities we've outlined above. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and responsibility.
