Job description

At Switch, we don’t just design, build and operate data centers—we are enabling the technology of the future. Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.

We believe that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the world’s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.

The Role: Senior Technical Portfolio Manager

The Senior Technical Portfolio Manager leads complex, cross-functional programs that improve data center availability, strengthen operational performance, and turn engineering insights into measurable business outcomes.

You will partner with Engineering, Operations, Commissioning, Design, and business teams to improve how technical work is prioritized, resourced, executed, reported, and closed. You will lead retrofit projects, technical improvement initiatives, tool development, and post-event programs while establishing clear ownership, milestones, risks, dependencies, and measures of success.

This role requires significant autonomy and the ability to create structure where processes or requirements are still developing. You will translate field experience and operational lessons into practical improvements while giving leaders clear visibility into capacity, risks, decisions, and outcomes.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead technical programs that improve availability, operational performance, and business outcomes across critical data center environments.
  • Manage retrofit projects, tool development, issue resolution, and post-event improvement initiatives from definition through execution and verified closure.
  • Build and maintain program plans, roadmaps, milestones, dependencies, risks, success measures, and executive reporting.
  • Establish clear ownership and accountability across complex technical workstreams.
  • Develop resource and capacity models that quantify program demand, workload, labor requirements, capacity gaps, and staffing options.
  • Develop headcount and resource recommendations supported by clear assumptions, timing, and expected business impact.
  • Partner across Engineering, Operations, Commissioning, Design, and business teams to align priorities and execution plans.
  • Identify blockers and dependencies early and drive decisions needed to keep critical work moving.
  • Translate field experience, technical findings, and operational lessons into improvements to designs, processes, tools, and execution practices.
  • Coordinate follow-up after significant operational events by translating findings into defined actions, owners, timelines, and measurable closure criteria.
  • Track risks, issues, decisions, and action items through resolution.
  • Define requirements and support the rollout and adoption of tools and workflows that improve intake, prioritization, tracking, reporting, and closure.
  • Monitor adoption and effectiveness of new processes and tools and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Analyze technical, operational, and portfolio data to identify trends, risks, capacity constraints, and opportunities.
  • Prepare concise, decision-ready updates for senior leadership covering progress, risks, resource needs, blockers, decisions, and recommended actions.
  • Manage competing priorities across multiple programs while maintaining focus on measurable outcomes.
What We’re Looking For
  • You create structure, clarity, and accountability in complex technical environments.
  • You operate independently and move important work forward without requiring close day-to-day direction.
  • You communicate complex technical information clearly to executive, business, and technical audiences.
  • You influence teams and drive accountability without relying on formal authority.
  • You connect technical details, operational risk, resource capacity, business priorities, and leadership decisions.
  • You identify risks, dependencies, and resource constraints early and develop practical solutions.
  • You use data and clearly stated assumptions to support resource and investment recommendations.
  • You bring the right stakeholders together when decisions cross organizational boundaries.
  • You follow work through implementation, adoption, and measurable closure rather than treating delivery as complete at launch.
  • You remain effective when priorities change or requirements are not fully defined.
What You’ll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience leading complex technical programs, portfolios, or cross-functional initiatives in data centers, critical infrastructure, engineering, technology, industrial operations, or a related environment.

  • Experience managing risks, issues, action items, technical workstreams, operational handoffs, capital projects, or retrofit initiatives.
  • Experience developing program plans, roadmaps, milestones, dependencies, success measures, and executive reporting.
  • Experience developing resource plans, labor forecasts, capacity models, or headcount recommendations that define workload assumptions, required roles, timing, capacity gaps, and expected delivery impact.
  • Experience defining requirements and supporting the implementation or adoption of workflow, intake, ticketing, dashboard, reporting, or work-management tools.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex technical and operational information and translate findings into practical recommendations.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation, and executive communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, resolve ambiguity, facilitate decisions, and drive results across cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and advance priorities with limited supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree or relevant program or project management certification.
  • Experience supporting data centers, mission-critical infrastructure, engineering, or high-reliability operations.
  • Experience leading retrofit, availability, reliability, or operational improvement programs.
  • Experience with dashboards, business intelligence platforms, reporting systems, or work-management tools.
  • Experience supporting post-event corrective action programs, lessons learned, or technical continuous improvement initiatives.

We recognize that qualified candidates may not meet every preferred qualification. If your experience aligns with the core responsibilities of the role, we encourage you to apply.
