Sr. Tax Manager | Hybrid - Chicago | $150,000 to $175,000 + Bonus/Benefits
We are seeking an experienced Senior Tax Manager to lead our client's income tax accounting and provision function. This position will have significant ownership of ASC 740, quarterly and annual tax provisions, tax reporting, and related technical tax accounting matters.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong combination of corporate tax accounting, technical ASC 740 expertise, and leadership experience within a complex organization. This role will partner closely with Accounting, Finance, FP&A, external auditors, and senior leadership.
Responsibilities
- Lead the quarterly and annual global income tax provision process in accordance with ASC 740.
- Prepare and/or review current and deferred tax calculations, tax account reconciliations, effective tax rate calculations, and supporting provision workpapers.
- Manage the calculation and documentation of deferred tax assets and liabilities, including valuation allowance assessments.
- Oversee accounting and documentation for uncertain tax positions (FIN 48).
- Prepare and review income tax disclosures and supporting documentation for quarterly and annual financial statements.
- Analyze the impact of changes in tax laws, business activity, acquisitions, restructurings, and other transactions on the company’s tax provision.
- Partner with Accounting and FP&A on tax forecasting, effective tax rate projections, and cash tax planning.
- Coordinate with external auditors and provide supporting documentation related to the income tax provision and tax accounts.
- Support federal, state, and international income tax compliance activities and ensure provision-to-return adjustments are appropriately recorded.
- Review tax balance sheet accounts and oversee related reconciliations and journal entries.
- Assist with tax accounting associated with M&A, purchase accounting, legal entity restructuring, and other strategic transactions.
- Develop and maintain strong tax controls, documentation, and processes to support financial reporting requirements.
- Identify opportunities to automate and improve the tax provision process, including better utilization of tax technology.
- Research complex tax accounting matters and prepare technical documentation and memoranda as needed.
- Partner cross-functionally with Accounting, Finance, Legal, Treasury, and other business functions.
- Manage, mentor, and develop tax professionals while helping build a high-performing tax function.
- Support additional tax projects and initiatives as the organization continues to grow.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field required.
- CPA and/or Master’s in Taxation strongly preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive corporate and/or public accounting tax experience.
- Strong hands-on expertise with ASC 740 and income tax provision accounting.
- Experience with quarterly and annual tax provisions within a complex corporate environment.
- Strong understanding of deferred taxes, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions, effective tax rate reconciliation, and tax footnote disclosures.
- Experience working with external auditors and supporting financial statement audits.
- Public accounting experience, particularly with a Big Four or large national firm, is a plus.
- Experience within a publicly traded or similarly complex organization strongly preferred.
- Exposure to federal, state, and international income tax matters preferred.
- Experience with tax provision software such as OneSource Tax Provision, Corptax, or similar platforms preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large and complex financial datasets.
- Strong technical research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate complex tax matters clearly to both tax and non-tax stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
