Senior Tax Accountant

Position Overview
Our clients established Worcester-based CPA firm is seeking an experienced Senior Tax Accountant to join their growing practice. This role combines advanced technical tax expertise with supervisory responsibilities, requiring someone who can handle complex tax compliance and planning while mentoring junior staff members. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience across multiple entity types and demonstrate strong leadership capabilities in a collaborative team environment.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Preparation
- Prepare and review complex federal and state income tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, LLCs, S-corporations, trusts, and estates
- Handle high-net-worth individual tax returns with multiple income sources, investment portfolios, and complex deduction scenarios
- Manage multi-state tax compliance issues, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and other New England states
- Prepare quarterly estimated tax calculations and payments for individual and business clients
- Process tax extensions and coordinate filing deadlines across multiple jurisdictions and entity types
Advanced Tax Planning & Consulting
- Develop comprehensive tax strategies for closely-held businesses and high-income individuals
- Conduct year-end tax planning sessions with clients to minimize current and future tax liabilities
- Analyze business transactions for optimal tax treatment, including entity selection and restructuring opportunities
- Provide succession planning and estate tax guidance for family-owned businesses
- Research complex tax issues using professional databases and provide written recommendations to clients
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as primary tax advisor for assigned portfolio of clients, maintaining strong professional relationships
- Conduct client meetings to discuss tax planning strategies, compliance requirements, and regulatory changes
- Communicate complex tax concepts clearly to clients with varying levels of financial sophistication
- Coordinate with clients' other professional advisors including attorneys, financial planners, and investment managers
- Handle IRS and state revenue department correspondence, examinations, and appeals processes
Team Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise and mentor staff accountants and tax preparers on technical and procedural matters
- Review junior staff work for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with professional standards
- Provide training on tax software, research techniques, and client service best practices
- Assist in performance evaluations and professional development planning for team members
- Lead special projects and process improvement initiatives within the tax department
Quality Control & Professional Standards
- Maintain detailed and organized workpapers supporting all tax positions and calculations
- Ensure compliance with firm quality control procedures and professional standards
- Participate in internal continuing education programs and stay current with tax law changes
- Support firm's quality review processes and implement recommendations for improvement
- Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics in all client interactions
Required Qualifications
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA license in Massachusetts preferred, or ability to obtain within 18 months
- Enrolled Agent (EA) certification acceptable in lieu of CPA
Professional Experience
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting
- Extensive experience with individual, corporate, partnership, and fiduciary tax returns
- Demonstrated experience with complex tax planning and consulting engagements
- Previous supervisory or mentoring experience preferred
- Massachusetts and multi-state tax compliance experience strongly preferred
Technical Competencies
- Advanced proficiency in professional tax software (CCH ProSystem fx, Lacerte, Drake, or similar)
- Expert knowledge of federal tax code and Massachusetts tax regulations
- Strong research skills using CCH, BNA, RIA, or other professional tax databases
- Experience with tax provision work under ASC 740 for compiled and reviewed financial statements
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for complex calculations and analysis

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to explain complex concepts clearly
- Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities with attention to detail
- Proven project management skills with ability to handle multiple clients and deadlines simultaneously
- Leadership capabilities and ability to develop junior staff members
- Client service orientation with relationship-building and business development skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Taxation or related field
- Experience with estate and gift tax planning and compliance
- Knowledge of Massachusetts tax incentives and credits for businesses
- Familiarity with tax issues affecting healthcare, manufacturing, or technology companies
- Experience with international tax reporting requirements (Forms 8938, FBAR, etc.)
- Previous experience in Central Massachusetts market
Working Conditions
- Professional office environment in Worcester with flexible work arrangements available
