Job summary

KMS Solutions, LLC is seeking a Senior Systems Safety Engineer to support the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI. You will apply safety engineering principles across the system life-cycle to balance safety with operational effectiveness, time, and cost.

The role requires a Bachelor's in a STEM field, 10 years of systems safety experience, and familiarity with NAVSEA and MIL-STD-882E. Telework up to 40% may be available; U.S. citizenship and DoD clearance readiness are required.

Position Summary

This Senior Systems Safety Engineer role is part of a team of engineers and technicians providing Systems Safety engineering to the Ranges, Engineering, and Analysis Department at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, RI. This position will apply engineering and management principles, criteria, & techniques to optimize safety within constraints of operational effectiveness, time, & cost throughout the system life-cycle.

Essential Functions

  • Research and analyze system design drawings, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate systems for safety risk and various Safety Review Board engagements.
  • Evaluate life-cycle test, operation, maintenance, and other performance phases of equipment, components, and systems from a safety perspective.
  • Investigate potential system failures and life cycle hazards and make recommendations to ensure safe and effective operation and deployment and mitigate failure effect and frequency.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a science, technology, engineering, or math field.
  • Ten (10) years of systems safety engineering experience, particularly with respect to hazard analysis and failure mode analysis.
  • Experience performing software systems safety analysis.
  • Strong understanding of military systems safety standards including MIL-STD-882E and NAVSEA System Safety Engineering Manual.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in a science, technology, engineering, or math field.
  • Fifteen (15) years of systems safety engineering experience, particularly with respect to hazard analysis and failure mode analysis.
  • Five (5) years of experience performing software systems safety analysis.
  • Engineering experience specifically with Navy and/or undersea warfare systems and weapons systems such as torpedoes, mine hunting and warfare systems, and unmanned underseas vehicles (UUVs).
  • Strong proficiency in leveraging generative AI tools and prompt engineering methodologies to automate workflows, accelerate analyses, and improve organizational efficiencies.
  • Capable of effectively working and problem solving in both independent and team environments.
  • Experience communicating and interacting with all levels of customer and company leadership.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and/or maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance and required access to all worksite locations. Security clearances may only be granted to U.S. citizens. Security clearances may only be granted to U.S. citizens.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

The typical workday is eight hours in length. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, with concurrence from the supervisor. Attendance at mandatory meetings is required. Must be available during the core work hours as determined by the contract/location and must account for the required number of hours in a pay period to maintain Full-time status.

Telework:
  • Telework may be allowed up to 40% after an introductory period of six months.
  • Subject to change based on business needs and customer requirements.
Travel:
  • Ability to travel CONUS; potential to travel OCONUS.
  • Travel up to 10% may be required.
