Job summary

Johnson & Johnson’s Orthopaedics division seeks a Senior System Engineer to lead the definition, integration, and evaluation of advanced technology prototypes for surgical robotics and digital orthopedics. Based in Boston or Raynham, you will drive feasibility studies, prototype requirements, and demonstration plans with autonomous execution.

You will partner with R&D, clinical, regulatory, and external partners, applying rigorous engineering and data-driven evaluations to inform technology

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in a technical field (Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering) and relevant multidisciplinary experience.
• 5+ years in systems engineering, prototype development, or applied research.
• Experience with medical devices, surgical robotics, or digital surgery is preferred; familiarity with bench/verification tests is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Define system definition and demonstration strategy for advanced technology prototypes and proofs of concept, including architecture and integration approach.
• Develop and document prototype requirements from technology hypotheses and early user needs.
• Collaborate across R&D, clinical, quality, regulatory, and engineering to assess feasibility and integration potential.
• Hands-on work with prototypes, demonstration setups, and experimental platforms to accelerate learning and decisions.
• Design prototype architectures integrating external technologies, electromechanical subsystems, software, sensing, and controls.
• Apply risk-based engineering to identify hazards, limitations, and evidence gaps.
