Senior System Safety Engineer
#Eng-IT-01
Peak is seeking an experienced Senior Product Safety Engineer to join our client's team in a fully remote role. This position will provide technical leadership in product-level system safety for complex pipeline inspection tools and associated equipment.
This is a product safety engineering role, focused on identifying and reducing electrical, mechanical, and environmental risks throughout the design, development, testing, integration, and lifecycle of engineered products. It is not a general EHS or workplace safety position.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain a formal safety evaluation process for product and tool designs.
- Develop and maintain documented safety rationales for pipeline inspection tools.
- Lead and facilitate FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), hazard analysis, and other system safety activities.
- Identify credible hazards and threats and establish appropriate technical justification for risk exclusions.
- Identify applicable safety standards, engineering practices, and certification requirements.
- Review mechanical, electrical, and control-system designs and provide safety-focused recommendations.
- Partner with engineering and test teams to ensure safety recommendations are implemented and verified.
- Review and manage safety-related work performed by suppliers and contractors.
- Review test plans, test results, verification evidence, and safety documentation.
- Communicate safety-case status, unresolved assumptions, verification gaps, mitigation options, and residual risk to engineering teams and management.
- Provide independent, evidence-based technical recommendations regarding product safety and risk.
Senior-Level Expectations
- Apply sound engineering judgment when standards, field history, operating conditions, and business requirements do not provide an obvious solution.
- Identify missing information and close safety-critical gaps through analysis, testing, supplier input, or expert review.
- Make timely and technically defensible recommendations using available data while clearly documenting assumptions, uncertainty, severity, likelihood, and residual risk.
- Challenge unsupported assumptions and ensure risk controls provide meaningful safety improvements.
- Balance safety requirements with product functionality, cost, schedule, manufacturability, and field conditions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
- 8+ years of experience in electrical engineering, product safety, functional safety, compliance engineering, certification engineering, or safety-critical product development.
- Experience applying structured safety methods to complex products, systems, or equipment.
- Strong understanding of hazard analysis, risk reduction, safety requirements, verification planning, validation evidence, and residual-risk assessment.
- Working knowledge of functional safety and safety-related control concepts, such as ISO 13849, IEC 61508, IEC 62061, or similar frameworks.
- Familiarity with hazardous-location, explosive-atmosphere, and ignition-risk concepts related to electrical/electronic equipment.
- Strong knowledge of DC power distribution, batteries, current limiting, fusing, protection circuits, stored energy, fault currents, and thermal effects.
- Ability to review electrical schematics, PCB layouts, cable and connector drawings, enclosures, BOMs, test data, and safety documentation.
- Ability to determine whether design assumptions, protection methods, and verification evidence adequately support safety requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both engineering and executive-level audiences.
