Job summary

Applied Materials, Inc. in Santa Clara, CA is seeking a Systems Engineer to design, integrate, and optimize complex optical and electro‑mechanical subsystems for semiconductor manufacturing.

You will conduct thorough system testing, ensure quality, and drive cross‑functional collaboration across engineering teams. You will lead troubleshooting, verification, and documentation efforts, mentor junior staff, and support field activities.

Qualifications

• BS in Physics, Electrical/Mechanical/Optical Engineering or related field.
• 3+ years hands-on experience with complex optical, electro‑mechanical or opto‑mechanical systems.
• Troubleshoot and resolve system-level hardware issues independently.
• Able to read engineering drawings, schematics, and test procedures.
• Familiar with interferometers, power meters, and optical alignment tools.
• Experience in cleanroom environments including ESD and contamination control.
• Data collection and analysis; document issues and resolutions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform hands‑on assembly, integration, and testing of optical, opto‑mechanical, and electro‑mechanical subsystems.
• Own and refine system test procedures, calibration routines, and diagnostic protocols; maintain records.
• System‑level troubleshooting and root cause analysis; communicate findings to engineering teams.
• Support design verification and validation activities; provide feedback on design‑for‑build and design‑for‑test.
• Develop and maintain build documentation, work instructions, and test procedures for manufacturing ramp.
• Identify and implement process improvements to enhance system reliability, build efficiency, and test coverage.
• Provide technical guidance to junior team members and lab technicians.
• Participate in on‑site customer support, installation, and qualification activities.
