Job summary

EnergyX in Austin is seeking a Synthetic Chemist to lead design, synthesis, and optimization of polymer chemistries for ion exchange membranes, collaborating with process and stack engineering to translate lab-scale chemistry into scalable manufacturing.

You will develop monomer and crosslinking systems, guide bench-scale synthesis, and characterize membranes using FTIR, NMR, ion exchange tests, and conductivity measurements, while contributing to IP filings and cross-functional projects.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or MS in Chemistry, Polymer Science or closely related field.
• Hands-on experience with ion-containing or ion-conductive polymers.
• Knowledge of polymerization and crosslinking chemistries.
• Experience with polymer/membrane characterization techniques.
• Ability to document procedures and present results clearly.

Responsibilities

• Design, synthesize, and optimize polymer chemistries for ion exchange membranes.
• Develop monomer, crosslinker, and initiator systems for roll-to-roll casting.
• Lead bench-scale synthesis and support scale-up to pilot/production.
• Characterize membranes using FTIR, NMR, ion exchange capacity, and conductivity tests.
• Diagnose degradation mechanisms and propose chemistry-based solutions.
• Document synthesis routes and experimental data; contribute to IP filings.
• Collaborate with process engineering and commercial teams to align requirements.
• Maintain safe handling and disposal of reactive monomers and solvents.
