Job summary

Sarmal is seeking a Senior Scientist to Staff Scientist, Surface Chemist, to drive design, development, and optimization of functionalized surfaces for NGS and molecular diagnostic platforms. This role sits at the interface of chemistry, materials science, and device engineering, delivering robust, manufacturable surface chemistries and enabling high-performance assays.

Qualifications

• Experience developing functional surfaces for biomolecular applications.
• Hands-on expertise in surface chemistry methods and thin-film deposition.
• Strong DOE and data interpretation skills.
• Familiar with QC method development for surface characterization.

Responsibilities

• Design, synthesize, and optimize surface chemistries for oligonucleotide/probe immobilization on NGS and IVD platforms.
• Develop and optimize surface functionalization on diverse substrates (glass, silicon, metals, polymers).
• Lead scale-up of surface deposition and patterning processes (PE-CVD, CVD, spin-/dip-/spray coating, plasma treatment).
• Characterize surface chemistry performance with analytical tools and correlate to assay performance.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to transition processes to manufacturing under design control.
• Design DOEs to optimize coating uniformity, shelf-life, and lot-to-lot consistency.
