Liberty Mutual Surety is currently recruiting for a Surety Underwriter to join our contract team in Seattle, WA.

As a Surety Underwriter, you will market, underwrite, and service independent agents, brokers, and contract surety accounts within an assigned territory. You will focus on building and maintaining positive relationships rather than transactional sales, using your rapport-building skills. You will perform primary credit underwriting and financial/risk analysis, provide recommendations, and make decisions on new and existing accounts. This role is ideal for an experienced, self-motivated surety professional eager to grow their career with a top surety company that prioritizes its employees and customers.

Liberty Mutual Surety, a division of Liberty Mutual Insurance, is the world's largest surety provider, including in the United States. We operate globally through fronting relationships and subsidiaries, offering bonds in over 60 countries for construction firms, manufacturers, suppliers, and commercial enterprises. We are committed to mutually profitable relationships, providing smart business solutions, ease of doing business, and responsive service. We value a diverse workforce across more than 16 countries.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet with agents and brokers to solicit business, educate them on policies, procedures, and requirements, and act in a consultative capacity.
  • Underwrite new and existing account submissions using the authority granted, handling complex accounts as appropriate. Evaluate financial, technical, organizational, and management aspects, and meet with clients as needed.
  • Analyze financial statements to assess financial health and monitor risk through quarterly statements and data analysis.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with agents/brokers, overseeing a book of contract surety business and achieving marketing and profitability goals.
  • Identify cross-selling opportunities and stay updated on product lines.
  • Manage underwriting and workflow issues within policy frameworks, monitor existing business, and evaluate business characteristics regularly.
  • Assess changes in business aspects, coordinate issues with the home office, and evaluate business continuity arrangements.
  • Apply sound judgment for credit recommendations outside normal standards, document decisions thoroughly, and communicate with senior staff.
  • Prepare for and lead meetings with agents and clients, and oversee workflow and billing instructions.
  • Mentor junior staff as appropriate and perform special projects as assigned.

Please note: Position level and compensation depend on location and experience.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field, with a minimum of 7 years (preferably 10+) surety underwriting or related experience, especially in contract surety.
  • Strong understanding of financial and accounting principles and sound business judgment.
  • Proven analytical skills in risk evaluation.
  • AFSB certification preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain complex analyses clearly.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships with agents, brokers, and other professionals.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Note: Salary and level are based on experience and location.
