Job summary

HDR, Inc. seeks a Substation Senior Structural Engineer to design, review, and oversee high‑voltage substation structural components up to 500kV. You will lead foundation and steel design, review drawings, and mentor engineers while coordinating with a nationwide team.

Join HDR’s Power Delivery group to deliver robust, code‑compliant solutions and support cross‑training across offices. Some travel may be required as projects span multiple sites.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board (PE or equivalent).
• Minimum 10 years of structural engineering experience related to building design.
• Experience with AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar analytical software.
• Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis.
• Experience in design calculations, layouts, and detailing of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.
• Commitment to HDR’s employee‑owned culture.

Responsibilities

• Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute structural engineering tasks for substation members (steel shapes, framing, folded plate tubular shapes).
• Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute foundation design tasks (piers, footings, piles) using industry software.
• Support layout designs, plans, elevations, sections, and BOMs.
• Prepare or review construction specifications and materials.
• Assign tasks and provide technical guidance to team members.
• Coordinate quality checks and reviews per HDR QMS requirements.
• Collaborate with engineers for cross-training and standards.
• Work independently and mentor Project Engineers, EITs, or Drafters.
• Lead multiple projects across locations and travel as needed.
• Participate in training and industry presentations.
