Job Summary

We are looking for a Substation Protection & Control Engineer to design protection and control projects for electric utilities ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV. The role will use knowledge of digital logic, AC and DC circuits, and substation engineering to deliver high‑quality designs.

Location & Travel

Office location: Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN. The position is fully remote, but candidates must travel to customer sites as required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design relay one‑line diagrams, three‑line AC schematics, and DC protection schematics.
  • Create panel layouts and wiring designs.
  • Develop bills of materials based on design criteria.
  • Perform quality control checks on wiring designs.
  • Support the entire project lifecycle from scoping to final design and implementation.
  • Provide construction support.
  • Apply the National Electrical Safety Code and client standards to design processes.
  • Collaborate with designers/drafters to produce required drawings.
  • Prepare studies and reports for transmission and distribution systems.
  • Perform electrical power calculations.
  • Interface with local clients and partner with utility clients nationwide.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • At least 2+ years of substation protection/control design or field testing/commissioning experience.
  • Experience executing substation protection and control projects.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with internal teams and clients.
  • Ability to read and design one‑line, three‑line, AC/DC schematic, and wiring drawings.
  • Proficient in meeting deadlines under pressure.
  • Collaborative and leadership skills for teamwork.
  • Self‑starter ability with minimal direction.
  • Detail oriented and analytical problem‑solving skills.
  • High computer competency.
  • Willingness to travel to project or client sites.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer Intern (EI or EIT) certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience performing quality control on small substation protection and control design projects.
  • CAD tool experience.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Field testing/commissioning experience.
Pay Range

$87,100 – $157,450
