Job summary

Beta Engineering, a Crest Industries subsidiary, seeks a Substation Engineer to design and document high voltage substations. You will work with project teams, customers, and other engineering disciplines to ensure designs meet codes and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree (or higher) in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering.
  • 5+ years in physical design of high voltage substations.
  • PE license required.
  • Strong skills in MS Word, Mathcad, Excel, and PowerPoint; good verbal/written communication.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, CDEGS, CYMCAP, LitePro, FEAP, and related tools is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Check conduit, grounding, control shelter, and electrical layouts.
  • Perform grounding, conduit fill, pulling tension, and other substation calculations.
  • Create and review material lists for major and minor equipment.
  • Coordinate with customer representatives, PM teams, and other disciplines.
  • Answer technical questions from construction managers, field staff, and customers.
  • Travel to active job sites and customer offices as needed.

Beta Engineering is currently looking for a Substation Engineer to join their team. Substation Engineers (SE) are responsible for the design, interpretation, application and documentation of drawings and calculations pertaining to the physical design of a substation. Substation Engineers are tasked with ensuring that designs, and their applications, are completed to code and standards set forth by the appropriate authoritative bodies. In addition, SE’s are required to work with customer representatives, Project Management Teams and other engineering disciplines to ensure designs meet appropriate specifications and requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Checks conduit, grounding, control shelter, electrical arrangements, outdoor lighting and equipment vendor design packages
  • Performs and checks grounding calculations, conduit fill calculations, pulling tension calculations, vehicle tracking calculations, outdoor lighting calculations, lightning protection designs calculations, substation Sag-10 calculations, flexible jumper calculations, bus design calculations, arc-flash calculations, insulation coordination calculations, and underground ampacity calculations
  • Creates and checks material list descriptions for all major equipment and minor substation material
  • Demonstrates integrity and ethics in all client relationships and communications
  • Answers technical questions posed by construction managers, field staff, project managers, customers and their representatives
  • Recognize and recommend methods to improve customer’s experience
  • Perform other studies as able and required
  • Travels periodically to both customer offices for project meetings and to job sites for construction visits and testing
  • Manages day-to-day activities of schedule and design of projects assigned to them
  • Coordinates and problem solves between design teams and departments

  • Must have clean driving record as use of company vehicles is a requirement of position
  • Adhere to and practice the Beta core competencies and Beta principle
  • Maintains check print set of all work they perform
  • Utilizes the department resources in an effective manner to get all work accomplished on time and correctly
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering
  • 5 plus years of experience in the physical design of high voltage substations is required
  • PE license is required
  • Strong background in Microsoft Word, Mathcad, Excel, and PowerPoint required; strong verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Knowledge of all or some of the following applications are preferred: AutoCAD, CDEGS grounding software, CYMCAP, LitePro, FEAP, Southwire SAG/Ten, Alcoa, Vehicle Tracking, SAP-2000
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Will work in an office environment with minimal exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental hazards
  • Overnight travel is required to an active construction site for a period of one or two weeks at a time. Ability to perform duties safely and to adhere to each job site’s safety requirements; while working on an active job site, outdoors, is a requirement
