The Senior Substation Engineer plays an important role in design, planning, and operation of electrical substationsthat are the chief support of power transmission and distribution systems.
The Senior Substation Engineer is responsible for the design, engineering, and delivery of electrical substation projects supporting utility, renewable energy, industrial, and infrastructure clients across the United States. This role provides technical leadership on projects ranging from distribution upgrades to transmission substations up to 345 kV, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop substation concepts, project scopes, execution plans, and cost estimates.
- Prepare physical design and construction packages for air-insulated substations up to 345 kV.
- Design substation layouts, grounding and lightning protection systems, control buildings, raceways, AC/DC auxiliary systems, and site plans.
- Perform engineering calculations and studies related to grounding, load analysis, equipment selection, and system performance.
- Prepare material lists, equipment specifications, and support procurement activities.
- Review engineering deliverables for quality, accuracy, and compliance.
- Serve as Lead Engineer or Project Engineer on assigned projects.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, protection and controls, transmission, telecommunications, and other engineering teams.
- Develop schedules, budgets, and resource plans while monitoring project performance.
- Lead meetings with clients, contractors, utilities, and internal stakeholders.
Construction & Field Support
- Provide engineering support during construction, testing, and commissioning.
- Conduct site visits, verify field conditions, and ensure installations meet design and regulatory requirements.
- Review contractor change requests, project progress, and equipment inspections.
Technical & Client Support
- Conduct feasibility, technical, and economic evaluations of design alternatives.
- Prepare reports, analyses, and recommendations for clients and management.
- Build strong client relationships and support proposal development and business growth initiatives.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
Qualifications & Skills
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 5-10 years of substation engineering and design experience.
- Experience with air-insulated substations up to 345 kV.
- Strong knowledge of substation layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control buildings, and AC/DC systems.
- Familiarity with NESC, IEEE, ANSI standards, and utility design practices.
- Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Willingness to travel as needed.
Preferred
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one.
- Experience with utilities, EPC firms, or power engineering consulting.
- Background in commissioning, testing, and field support.
- Experience with 3D modeling/design software.
- Understanding of protection and control systems.
- Experience supporting renewable energy interconnection projects.
