Job summary

CEI is seeking a Senior Substation Design Engineer to support electric utility substation programs through the full project lifecycle. This role is primarily remote with periodic onsite visits for field walk-downs and project support, coordinating engineering inputs across teams and external partners.

You will lead design oversight, develop estimates, and ensure adherence to safety standards while delivering on schedule. Requires 5+ years in substation design and US work authorization.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience designing electric utility substations (substation design experience is required).
• Experience with bills of materials and transmission/distribution substation design practices.
• Ability to prepare estimates, feasibility studies, and technical reports/packages.
• Working knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and standard desktop productivity tools.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and technical documentation skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver work on schedule with limited oversight.
• Ability to travel to job sites as needed; valid driver’s license required.
• Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship from the client.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the owner’s engineer representative for substation projects, coordinating engineering inputs across multiple functional groups.
• Develop and review estimates, feasibility studies, and technical evaluation packages to support scope, schedule, and budget decisions.
• Guide design progress through established workflows, checkpoints, and required criteria to ensure completeness and constructability.
• Review drawing sets and design documentation for accuracy, readability, and adherence to specifications and industry standards.
• Support construction execution by reviewing field issues, responding to engineering challenges, and coordinating with field personnel as needed.
• Promote and reinforce a strong safety culture, including compliance with safety and industrial hygiene practices.

• Title: Senior Substation Design Engineer
• Location: Johnston, RI (Remote; However must be local to Johnston, RI as occasional onsite visits for field walk-downs/site walks will be required)
• Contract: W2 only, 12 month contract with potential for extension or conversion to full time with the client.
• Pay: $70-75/hour + optional medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match

Overview

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred; Mechanical or Civil also acceptable).

Preferred Skills

• 10 years of experience in substation design.
• 3 years of project management experience.
• Experience supporting field walk-downs, constructability reviews, and resolving construction‑phase engineering issues.
• Ability to pursue/maintain confined space certification and perform limited physical access requirements (e.g., ladders, manholes/vaults) when needed.
