Job summary

Degenkolb Engineers seeks an Associate Principal or Principal to lead complex design-build projects and seismic retrofit work for civic and university facilities in Southern California. The role emphasizes client relationships and staff mentorship, with growth opportunities in leadership.

The candidate should have deep education/civic sector experience, a California license, and a track record in business development, mentoring, and project leadership within a collaborative, hybrid work

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering (MS preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in structural and seismic engineering.
  • California Civil Engineering license required (Registration as a Structural Engineer preferred).
  • Established relationships within Southern California AEC and design-build community.
  • Proven success developing client relationships and generating project opportunities.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • MS degree in Structural Engineering (desired).
  • California Structural Engineer license (desired).
  • 4–6 years of experience leading and managing technical staff (desired).
  • Experience in post-earthquake reconnaissance and/or structural engineering research (desired).
  • Active participation and leadership in professional organizations (desired).

Responsibilities

  • Lead project teams from project selection, conceptual design through construction administration.
  • Oversee project delivery, staffing, utilization, and financial performance.
  • Mentor, develop, and supervise technical staff and project managers.
  • Foster collaboration, accountability, inclusion, and technical excellence.
  • Serve as a technical leader and trusted advisor within the firm and for clients.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships to support repeat business and new opportunities.
  • Identify and secure new work with existing and prospective clients.
  • Ensure project quality and resolve technical or client-service issues.
  • Maintain leadership in professional organizations related to structural and earthquake engineering.
