Job summary

HDR is seeking a Structural Engineer (Buildings) to lead technical design and coordination across disciplines in Cincinnati, OH. You will mentor interns, develop structural deliverables, and ensure code compliance for complex building projects.

Ideal candidates hold a Civil/Structural Engineering degree with a PE license and extensive experience with building structures and design software. HDR offers an employee-owned culture and growth opportunities in Building Engineering.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent recognized by the local licensing board required.
  • Previous structural engineer experience required.
  • Experience with design software: AutoCAD, RISA, Staad, SAP, ETABS, SAFE, RAM, Tedds.
  • Experience with architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firms preferred.
  • Active employee-owned culture experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical expert with authority in structural engineering for projects.
  • Coordinate structural design work from schematic through CD phases.
  • Lead production of structural deliverables with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Analyze and design superstructure components for buildings.
  • Mentor structural interns and EITs; review documents for conflicts.
  • Participate in code reviews and agency meetings for compliance.
  • Support design development and construction phase sessions on site.
  • Coordinate workload to meet project schedules.

Structural Engineer (Buildings)
  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in structural engineering as it relates to projects; resolve problems of greater scope and complexity
  • Independently coordinate the work of the structural design team from schematic design through the design development and contract document phases of a project.
  • Collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team (architecture, MEP engineering, civil engineering, etc.) to lead the production of the structural deliverables for projects.
  • Analyze and design components of the superstructure for building projects.
  • Mentor and train structural interns and EITs within the department and across business groups.Review structural documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines and resolve conflicts in a timely manner.
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance.
  • Participate in design development and contract document work sessions at project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines.
  • Coordinate workload throughout the design phases to complete the documents on schedule.
  • Perform construction administration (CA) tasks such as submittal review, respond to requests for information (RFI’s) and other coordination tasks with contractors in the field during construction.
  • Coordinate and assist with affected disciplines, with any addendum, change proposal requests and change orders, and incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents.
  • Write and edit structural specifications, select procedures, materials and their respective sizes, and complete necessary calculations.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering; Structural emphasis.
  • A minimum of 4 years of structural engineering experience required.
  • 7+ years of structural engineering experience preferred.
  • Experience with design of Health Care and Higher Education projects is strongly encouraged.
