Job summary

BKV is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to lead design, analysis, and documentation for facility projects in the DC area. You will ensure code compliance, prepare detailed drawings, and direct junior staff.

Responsibilities include coordinating with discipline leaders, performing QA, and mentoring engineers while signing and sealing plans. ABET-accredited degree and PE license are required; MS/PE preferred.

Qualifications

  • Must have ABET-accredited BS in Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering license required; structural license preferred.
  • Proficiency with IBC and ASCE 7 building design codes; material design codes for steel, concrete, wood, masonry.

  • Determine feasibility of new facility engineering systems or modifications considering space, cost, and time.
  • Prepare calculations and designs for structural systems; ensure technical accuracy of project documents.
  • Lead, train, and direct junior engineers and designers on assigned projects.
  • Sign and seal engineering plans; coordinate with discipline leaders and other teams.
  • Coordinate scheduling and the design process for the DC structural team; perform QA reviews.
  • Support onboarding and interviewing activities for new team members.

Job description

  • Analyze the design requirements, specifications, and performance requirements to determine the best and most appropriate designs to meet customer expectations, code requirements, and all life and safety considerations.
  • Determine feasibility of designing new facility engineering systems or modifying existing systems considering cost, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical factors.
  • Provide technical information concerning advantages and limitations which affect long range facility and space planning.
  • Prepare or direct preparation of calculations and designs for structural engineering systems and detailed drawings. Responsible for the technical accuracy and completeness of the project documents on assigned projects.
  • Compile and analyze operation, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified designs.
  • Provide leadership, training and work direction for Junior Engineers, Engineers in Training, and Designers working on assigned projects.
  • Sign and seal engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects.
  • Responsible for disciplinary budget on assigned projects.
  • Coordinate the weekly team scheduling needs in support of the Director for the local DC structural staff.
  • Responsible for the design process coordination of the engineering discipline with the other discipline leaders.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews as per the BKV quality assurance process and guidelines.
  • Bring forward project and process insights/lessons learned for continuing education growth of BKV team members.
  • Participate with the Director of Structural Engineering in interviewing and onboarding for new DC structural team members.
Qualifications
  • Must have BS degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university. MS degree in Structural Engineering preferred.
  • Professional Engineering license required. Structural Engineering license preferred.
  • Must be proficient with the IBC and ASCE 7 building design codes as well as material specific design codes for steel, concrete, wood, and masonry.
  • Must be proficient with structural engineering software such as RISA 3D/Floor, RAM Steel, ADAPT Floorpro/Edge/Matt, Enercalc, Woodworks, Ramsteel, and Microsoft Office Suite. Revit experience preferred.
  • Must have ability to write reports and business correspondence. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and the general public.

Compensation range: $150,000 - $175,000 annually, or commensurate with experience.
