Job summary

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a qualified Statistician III to join the Statistics and Data Science department. Statisticians apply mathematical statistics, survey methodology, sampling, weighting, and variance estimation across health, society, economics, and global research to generate trustworthy data and insights.

They design dashboards, support data privacy, mentor staff, present results to clients, and contribute to proposals.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, data science, computer science, computational social science, or a related field required; Ph.D. preferred.
  • 4 years of experience in statistics, analytics, survey research, or related field (or Ph.D.).
  • Experience in data visualization design using tools like R, Tableau, and Power BI; data privacy methods; sampling, weighting, and variance estimation; and analytical pipelines.
  • Strong foundation in mathematical statistics: probability, estimation, inference, modeling, and study design.
  • Proficiency in R and Python; SAS proficiency is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide statistical expertise across projects, including study design and advanced methods.
  • Lead survey statistics tasks: sample design, weighting, nonresponse analyses, variance estimation.
  • Develop robust data pipelines to support reproducible analytics and ML/AI applications.
  • Uphold data disclosure limitation and data privacy best practices for public releases and restricted data.
  • Create dashboards and data visualizations; set visualization standards for projects.
  • Design and develop programs/scripts for data cleaning, integration, transformation, and validation.
  • Write and implement SAS, R, and Python programs to extract and manipulate data; link datasets; run analyses.
  • Establish reproducible analytic workflows with version control (Git) and testing.
  • Present results to clients; interact with clients to clarify needs and provide recommendations.
  • Mentor early career staff and contribute to proposals and business development.
