Job summary

Doeren Mayhew, a Grand Rapids-based firm, is seeking a Senior Tax Associate to join the State and Local Tax (SALT) team. The role offers exposure to a diverse client base and opportunities to contribute to the growth of our SALT practice across multiple offices, including Grand Rapids and Troy.

You will prepare and review state and local tax returns, conduct research, assist audits, and develop planning strategies while mentoring staff and collaborating with other departments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's and/or master's degree in accounting, taxation, or a related field.
• CPA or CPA track preferred, but not required.
• 2 years of experience in state and local tax, preferably in a public accounting or consulting firm.
• Knowledge of state and local tax laws and regulations.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and research skills, and written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and tax software mentioned (as relevant).
• Located within commuting distance of one of the Michigan, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida or Tennessee offices.

Responsibilities

• Prepare or review state and local sales tax returns, personal property tax returns, C‑corporation, S‑corporation, and Partnership income returns
• Conduct research and provide technical advice on state and local tax issues
• Assist clients with state and local tax audits, including audit defense and negotiation
• Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize state and local tax liabilities
• Stay current on state and local tax laws and regulations and communicate changes to clients and team members
• Research technical matters related to state and local tax
• Mentor and train staff members, providing guidance and support in their professional development
• Collaborate with other departments to ensure comprehensive client service
