Job summary

Nubank is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to own the architecture of our global Remittance and Cross-Border Payment Platform. You will design scalable multi-currency money movement, FX handling, and payout routing across international corridors.

You will collaborate with AML/KYC, compliance teams, and partner integrations to deliver reliable, low-latency rails while mentoring engineers and shaping the technical roadmap for fintech infrastructure at scale.

Qualifications

• Proven track record designing, operating, and scaling highly available backend distributed platforms.
• Hands-on experience building remittance systems, cross-border payments, multi-currency ledger engines, FX execution services, or integrations with international clearing systems.
• Fluent English; Portuguese or Spanish a plus; willingness to work in Brazil (hybrid) or US hubs.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve the long-term architectural vision for multi-currency money movement, FX rate locking, payout routing, and ledgering across international corridors.
• Architect plug-and-play integrations with global payout partners, banking networks, and local clearing rails with high reliability and low latency.
• Build transaction engines with exact-once delivery, deterministic ledger balancing, real-time liquidity management, and auditability under high concurrency.
• Partner with AML, KYC, Sanctions Screening, and Regulatory teams to embed real-time screening into payment paths.
• Drive RFCs and design reviews to guide cross-organizational architectural decisions.
• Mentor senior engineers across payments squads in distributed systems and resilience.

About the role

As Nubank scales its footprint globally, seamless international money movement is a cornerstone of our growth. We are looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to own the overarching architecture for Nubank’s global Remittance and Cross-Border Payment Platforms. In this role, you will sit at the strategic intersection of high-scale distributed backend systems, foreign exchange (FX) engines, international payment rails, and global compliance platforms. You won't just maintain existing pipelines, you will architect the foundation that enables instant, low-cost, multi-currency money movement for millions of users across borders.Your mission: maintain and grow a resilient, multi-currency remittance engine that abstracts away complex global payment rails and regulatory requirements into simple, reliable platform capabilities.

What You Will Own & Build

• Core Remittance Platform Architecture: Design and evolve the long-term technical vision for multi-currency money movement, FX rate locking, payout routing, and ledgering across international corridors.

• Global Rail Integration Strategy: Architect plug-and-play integrations with global payout partners, banking networks, and local clearing rails (e.g., PIX, SPEI, FedNow, SWIFT) with ultra-high reliability and low latencies.

• Resilient Ledgering & FX Management: Build transaction execution engines that guarantee exact-once delivery, deterministic ledger balancing, real-time liquidity management, and auditability under massive concurrency.

• Compliance & Risk System Abstractions: Partner with AML, KYC, Sanctions Screening, and Regulatory Engineering teams to embed real-time screening seamlessly into payment paths without degrading user experience or throughput.

• Technical RFC Leadership: Drive cross-organizational consensus on high-impact architectural decisions through detailed RFCs, design reviews, and technical documentation.

• Engineering Mentorship: Multiply organizational velocity by mentoring senior engineers across payments squads in distributed systems principles, resilience engineering, and payment domain knowledge.

What We Are Looking For

• Tenure in Backend Software Engineering: Proven track record of designing, operating, and scaling highly available, mission‑critical backend distributed platforms in demanding environments (e.g., fintech, payments, banking, or cloud platform infrastructure).

• Deep Payments Domain Expertise: Hands‑on experience building remittance systems, cross‑border payments, multi-currency ledger engines, FX execution services, or integrations with international payment clearing systems.

• Distributed Systems Mastery: High fluency with event‑driven architectures, transactional consistency, distributed sagas/orchestration, double‑entry accounting engines, and high‑concurrency microservices.

• Platform Mindset: Experience designing clean, developer‑friendly APIs, SDKs, and platform boundaries that enable product teams to quickly launch consumer‑facing remittance journeys.

• Cross‑Functional Influence: Proven ability to act as a horizontal technical leader, writing comprehensive design documents (RFCs), guiding executive leadership on technical trade‑offs, and building consensus across geographically distributed teams.

• Language & Location: Fluent English is required for international engineering collaboration. Portuguese or Spanish is a plus. Roles are open in Brazil (hybrid model) or key US hubs.
