In this role, you will lead the technical strategy, execution, and framework for Credit Karma's web development embedded inside our mobile application. You will serve as the technical anchor for a highly visible domain, architecting hybrid mobile-web experiences using Next.js and modern web frameworks to create seamless, high-performance user journeys. As a Senior Staff Engineer, you’ll drive complex, cross-team initiatives end-to-end, design durable software, and help engineers around you do the best work of their lives. We are also rapidly evolving our experiences with AI; ideally, you will bring a passion for building AI-native applications and help us thoughtfully integrate generative capabilities into the Credit Karma user experience as well as build a best in class developer experience.

Responsibilities

• Architectural Leadership: Drive and own the design, architecture, and implementation of durable, scalable web solutions embedded within the Credit Karma mobile app using Next.js and React.
• Drive Velocity: Accelerate customer, business, and technology outcomes by identifying key technical opportunities, resolving complex cross-cutting dependencies, and defining engineering standards for the front-end domain.
• Hybrid Mobile-Web Strategy: Bridge the gap between native mobile and web platforms. Ensure high performance, deep linking, state management, and seamless transitions between webviews and native app components.
• AI Integration: Proactively identify opportunities to enhance user experiences with AI. Guide the applicability of commoditized AI tools, agentic workflows, or LLMs to solve real-world financial problems for our members.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Product Management, Design, Data Science, and native Mobile Architecture teams to influence product roadmaps and drive end-to-end solutions.
• Mentorship & Community: Execute with a 'boundaryless mindset,' contributing to solutions outside your primary area of ownership. Coach and mentor Staff, Senior, and Junior engineers, raising the technical bar and driving the adoption of best practices across multiple teams.

Qualifications

• Experience: 8+ years of experience developing software for large-scale, consumer-facing applications, with a track record of technical leadership at the Staff or Senior Staff level.
• Front-End Expertise: Deep, expert-level proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Next.js, HTML, and CSS. Strong understanding of server-side rendering (SSR), static site generation (SSG), and front-end performance optimization for a consumer facing product.
• Mobile/Web Convergence: Proven experience building complex responsive web applications designed specifically to run inside mobile app webviews (iOS/Android) or hybrid application wrappers.
• AI & Machine Learning (Ideal/Bonus): Hands-on experience or strong working knowledge of integrating AI into production software. Familiarity with LLM APIs, prompt engineering, or modern AI frameworks (e.g., LangChain) is highly desired.
• System Design: 5+ years of experience designing complex distributed systems or front-end platforms that scale to millions of users.
• Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical trade-offs to senior product and business leaders. A 'self-starter' attitude with a proven ability to make decisions independently in a highly matrixed environment.
• Education: BS/MS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

The expected base pay range for this position is:

Oakland $220,500 - $298,500
