Job summary

The Hartford is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to design, build, and modernize Claims IT with strong Guidewire, Java, and AWS depth. Hybrid schedule with 3 days in Hartford, CT or other offices (Tue–Thu).

You will lead end-to-end engineering, mentor teams, and partner with business stakeholders to deliver scalable claims solutions. Ideal candidates bring Guidewire ClaimCenter expertise, Java API development, cloud experience, and hands-on API design, testing, and DevOps practices.

Qualifications

• Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.
• Bachelor's degree in CS, Engineering, or related field.
• 7+ years of software engineering in enterprise environments.
• Strong Guidewire cloud experience, preferably ClaimCenter implementation.
• Must have Guidewire claims center certification.
• Strong Java experience building APIs and distributed services.
• Strong AWS and/or GCP experience delivering production cloud solutions.
• Experience with event-driven systems, asynchronous messaging, and secure REST patterns.
• Proficient in automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices.
• Experience in observability, logging, and production operations support.
• Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and enhance Guidewire ClaimCenter workflows and integrations.
• Develop Java APIs and backend services for high-volume claims processing.
• Architect and implement cloud-native AWS services with reliability and security.
• Own end-to-end engineering delivery from design to production support.
• Implement CI/CD, code quality gates, observability, and standards.
• Collaborate with product owners, claims SMEs, architects, and operations.
• Lead incident troubleshooting and root-cause analysis with fixes.
• Mentor engineers through architecture reviews and best practices.
• Partner with business stakeholders to translate workflows into capabilities.
• Run discovery workshops to identify MVPs and quick-wins for automation.
• Prototype, validate with users, and productionize patterns into platforms.
• Embed with cross-functional teams during releases to unblock work.
• Create playbooks and onboarding guides to improve adoption.
• Act as technical bridge during rollouts and post-launch stabilization.
• Build agents with Google ADK for document understanding and decision support.
