Gusto is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer and Tech Lead to drive the technical direction of the internal Commerce Platform for packaging, pricing, and delivery to 500,000+ small businesses.

You will partner with product, data science, and cross-functional teams to build scalable platform infrastructure, ensuring reliability and performance while delivering business impact. This role emphasizes AI-enabled development and a strong ownership mindset.

Qualifications

• Over 10 years of software engineering experience.
• At least 2 years in a tech lead or staff engineer role.
• Mastery in at least one programming language (Ruby/Java/Python/Go).
• Experience building and operating large-scale backend platform systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and architect the Commerce Platform including catalog, promotion engine, subscriptions, and entitlement systems.
• Collaborate with product, data science, and cross-functional teams to drive technical roadmap.
• Deliver complex projects from scoping to rollout and iteration.
• Mentor engineers and foster craftsmanship and continuous improvement.
• Improve observability, reliability, and performance with defined SLOs and blameless post-mortems.
• Drive AI-enhanced development and best practices across the team.
